JOST SG3 SuperPads?? since when?
« on: March 29, 2016, 07:07:58 PM »
I was shopping for more pads and I came across these pads. When did these JOST SG3 pads come out? What are the reviews on these pads? And, Is Siaair pads still the ones to beat?

Nothing like reviewing them yourself.  :)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to order a 20 combo pack. It's hard to argue with $2.00 per pad.

I bowl 20-25 games a week, so the 20 (mix and match) pack makes sense for me. I bought a 20 Pack of Siaair from them last year, and I've just about used them all up. It's an excellent site to order from.

Before you order, please check out this thread on the Jost pads:
http://www.ballreviews.com/coverstock-preparation/jost-resurfacing-pads-t280532.0.html;msg1388804;topicseen#msg1388804

jbungard reported this problem:
"Update: I've been using the Joest pads for several months now and will be sticking to Abralon, Abranet, Wurth and Siaair in the future. The Joest pads use a thinner backing material. On a spinner, I've experience separation of the backing material from the abrasive while using the coarser grits that greatly shortens the life of the pad. I haven't had this happen when hand sanding or using finer grits on the spinner. YMMV."

Thanks for the update, charlest.

That post you reference is back from 2011. Is it possible that the backing on Joest pads have been improved over the past 5 years? Could the "SG3" model be different from the one referenced?

Maybe they're the same, but out of curiosity I'll try a few. I'm a little more concerned that they appear to be the same sanding material as Abralon. I really like the additional life of the Siaair pads.

It very well could be. The article pointed to above in the original post of this thread says the backing is thicker:
"The SG# pads feature a thicker foam that directly compare to the Abralon and Sia line of pads."

Let us know. I have far too many to need to test yet another pad.
Hey, there wasn't that much difference between the Abralon and the Siaair pads in durability. The key factor was they lasted longer AND cost less. The price of all these should be going down these days.

I just received my eBay order for 10 mixed SiaAir pads (360 & 500 grit), and the seller substituted Jost SG3 Superpads for the 360 grit SiaAir pads, saying the SiaAir pads were on backorder.  I'm not too happy about him not contacting me first to see if the substitution would be ok, but he did throw in an extra 360 pad, so I'll test them out in the next couple of days.  Initially comparing them to my own SiaAir 360 pads, the foam backing appears to be the same thickness.

I'll be interested to know what you think. I'll order pads next week.

I ended up ordering a mixed 20-pack of the Superpads. I tried them out for the first time yesterday.

As duvallite noted, they appear to be the same thickness as the Siaair pads. I worked on 2 different balls with the pads. For the first I went 500/1000/2000. The second I went 500/1000/2000/3000. There wasn't anything really different from using Abralon/Siaair. The resulting finish was similar. There didn't appear to be quality issues that would result with separation of the backing material.

The only thing that was a bit disturbing was the printed grit information on the back of the pads completely fading out by the end of the second use. Water throughly dissolves the ink on the backing. Have a magic marker ready so you know what pad you're using for future use.

Now it's on to seeing how long they effectively last. I should know in the next week or two.

Thanks, Steven.
Let's know what their apparent longevity is.
Shame, already, about the printing fading. Siaair and Abralon also fade but you can always see them; they never fade away completely.
