Just ordered a Vertex 1/2hp..
« on: October 20, 2004, 12:12:40 PM »
I'm new at this, so here goes.  I've always wanted a ball spinner and today I ordered a Vertex 1/2 hp from Vertexmold.com. The shop owner, Doug, was very helpful.  It should be here by next weekend.  I also ordered the tub, foot pedal, and starter kit.

I was wondering what's the best method for sanding the ball?  I do know water is used with sponges, sand paper, and clean towel.  I'm just looking for an easy method/ step by step directions.  User experience is prefered...

Thank you,

Robert

I guess what I'm getting at is that Doug was suggesting dividing the ball up in 4 quadrants instead of 6 for sanding.  Which is better?  Does that sanding method work for every ball?? Pearl, reactive, plastic, and soft rubber??

Two questions on soft rubber.  I have an old Ebonite Gyro 1 soft rubber ball that I still use.  Is it ok to lighlty sand it?  Is there a polish for soft rubber balls?  Sometimes, it just hooks too much.  I can stand in the left gutter and throw it out to the right gutter, watch it come back and miss all the pins....really dry lane conditions.

We still have the old Guardian protection on the wooden lanes.  After two sets, the cover is all torn up.  That's part of the reason why I purchased a ball spinner.

I have other equipment that I use in 2 houses.  I use an Ebonite Conquest w/spare ball on most ocasions and in the "good" house, I would use 2 Ebonite Tpc Players w/spare ball.  The spare ball is either a Tornado sparkle or white dot.

Cheers

Robert

Robert -- I'm NOT going to get this argument going again, but search for a thread in the Coverstock forum titled something like "2 sides, 4 sides, 6 sides . . . "  --  JohnP  Added on edit:  You will have to set your preferences to show posts for 120 days.

Already set it to 120 days... didn't see the post you were pointing out to.  Just a simple friendly answer to my question was all that I wanted.

This isn't an argument.

HI Robert
you will like having your own spinner to try stuff.
1st build your work place right height to set it on.
with a good light, electric ect.

need some cotton towels and rags .

I like using a CAB when sanding or refinishing
check out www.innovativebowling.com more info.
keep balls round.
But to polish towels work fine
try whatever black magic, track, or storm brands.
any questions let me know be gald to help.

rexb300,

Is it ok to sand the ball by hand or is purchasing a CAB the best way to sand/resurface a ball?

Cheers

Robert -- If you are doing light surface sanding, what I call "performance sanding", you will be fine without a CAB.  If you plan to completely refinish a ball, sanding it deep enough to get out the myriad of minor nicks and scratches a lane inflicts, do it with a CAB.  In fact, I've stopped doing this type of work and refer my customers to another shop that has a Haus refinishing machine.  Read the tips on the Jayhawk web site:

Good luck  --  JohnP

JohnP is right yes minor sanding by hand is fine
scotchbrite pads ect.
it will be a learning process.

I like using track clean & sheen with a towel
then polish or to clean surface better
Ulitmate quik-cut is a good product.

Rex,

Thanks for the reply.  I will try the scotch brite and sand paper.  I'm expecting the spinner to come in on Thursday or Friday.  I bowl tomorrow evening.  I worked on my Ebonite Conquest last week.  I sanded the ball with 320, 400, 600, and finally 1200 grit wet/dry sand paper.  I also have Neo tac liquid sand paper but only used it once.

Cheers

Thanks Bob

Just received my Vertex ball spinner tonite!  I ordered some neo tac and ebonite products from Bowlersparadise a few days ago.  The shipment should arrive Friday.  I'm thinking of a good workplace to put the spinner.  Should I keep it out in the garage?  I've seen the proshop people wear masks and bibs when working on ball resurfacing.  Is it really necessary?

Cheers

if you got the bowl that goes around the spinner
you won't need a bib maybe a old tshirt
I wear glasses anyway but the bowl works good.
good luck

Do you happen to have any pics of your "work shop" setup?  I'm trying to get an idea of where to set this up at.  The most likely place I can seup the tub and spinner is in the garage.  I just have to figure out where to run the water or is a spray bottle ok?

Cheers
