Conversion- Abralon to scotchbrite
« on: February 14, 2007, 01:52:19 AM »
I'm looking to find the conversion between scotchbrite to Abralon. For instance, I'm looking to get the finish of 4000 and 1000 Abralon. What scotchbrite pads will get me closest? Any thoughts?

IMHO nothing compares to Abralon.  A used grey pad may be close to 1000 Abralon, but scotchbrite doesn't get fine enough to match 4000.

Trizacting up to CO(white) pads will come close to 4000, but that's neither here nor there.  I don't know about 4000 abralon, but I have come really close to 2000 abralon using green scotch-brite and Brunswick Rough Buff.  Perhaps using grey scotch-brite plus rough buff will get you close.  I don't know what the grit in the rough buff would be considered, but if you use enough the ball gets pretty shiny.

Cerium Oxide Trizact pads are theoretically close to 10000 grit. I have done 4000 grit abralon on a Legends New Standard and done Trizact Cerium Oxide on it. The SUPER  hard Trizact made the very hard Legends diamond particles smoother than the 4000 Abralon which hardly affected it.

Trizact will affect the Legends balls, resins and particles; Abralon hardly affects it at all. I have also used BOTH on the Legends resins, like the Masterpiece: again, Abralon, whose silicon carbide abrasive, hardly affect it at all, while the Trizact DEFINITELY affect the Legends balls, ALL OF THEM/

Major difference!

If you want to affect Legends balls, use Trizact pads and nothing else.

I stand by my results.

The Scotch-Brite Blue nylon pad is closest to Abralon 1000 grit pad.

Grey pad is 800 grit. A Used Grey pad is who knows what. It can be any level of grit; I would not bet on it: could be 800, coild be 1500. An unknown entity.

7448 - Light Grey, called Ultra Fine Hand - (600-800) 800 grit.
6448 - Green (?), called Light Duty Hand Pad - (600) 600 grit
7447 - Maroon pad, called General Purpose Hand - (320-400) 320 grit
6444 - Brown pad, called Extra Duty Hand - (280-320) 240 grit

7440 - Tan pad, called Heavy Duty Hand Pad - (120-150) 60(?)
Green Scotch Brite is available EVERYWHERE. It's 600 grit.
Blue Scotch-Brite is considered to be about 1000 grit.
(The value inside the parentheses is directly from 3M.)
3M Chart
Less Aggressive --------> More Aggressive
7445 7448 6448 7447 6444 7446 7440

Maybe this helps...never 'delete' anything with good info in it.

I haven't used Trizact in a couple years, but from my recollection a Brunswick ball taken to CO rolled similar and looked similar to an Ebonite/Hammer ball at 4000 Abralon.  That is just my opinion.  I also find that balls from the factory at 4000 Abralon aren't as shiny as the ones I have taken to that same grit by hand.  Maybe we're just comparing apples and oranges and are getting off topic.  He wants a 4000 grit Abralon-like reaction using scotch-brite.  he did not ask which one works best.

I just tried this comparison on my New Standard and the CO trizact came significantly smoother on it than 4000 grit Abralon. It might be the diamond particles are not affected as much by the silicon carbide in the Abralon. Not sure.

No Scotch Brite pads will get him to the 4000 grit of Abralon, that I am currently aware of.
