Doc's Elixer... the real story
« on: June 27, 2003, 10:14:45 AM »
I know there are millionms of post on here that describe in detail about the Elixer and how it works but it would take me years to read every single one of the posts!

I basically want to know: how does it work when there is carrydown? I'm thinking about buying some. So if I put in on a Particle or Reactive ball that was, say, my primary CARRYDOWN ball, would the ball still hook in the carrydown, or just skid?

I can see it working if there is clean bhackends, because the ball is going to hook anyways, but what if I've got a primary particle or reactive ball (either sanded or slightly polished) that I use for Carrydown situations, and if I put this Elixer on it, would it still work on the Carrydown?

My best answer that I can come up with is that you will see a little bit more length out of the ball on carrydown situations.  Typically, after putting Elixer on a ball, it tends to act like you smoothed up the surface one notch or so versus how it would skid before.  So, if you have a ball that is scuffed to about 600 grit, the ball will react like it is scuffed at 800 grit or so.  I believe that the answer to your question would be that the ball will still work, but in order to keep the reaction at the same level as it was before the Elixer, you need to scuff the ball down 1 notch before applying Elixer to the ball.  You will notice more of a reaction change on a dull ball than you will on a polished ball.  So, if you have a ball scuffed at 600 and you want to keep it that way, you might want to take the ball down to 320 to 400 before applying the Elixer to it.  If the ball is at 1000 and you want to keep it there, take the surface down to about 800 before applying Elixer.

For my dull particle stuff, I scuff it with green ScotchBrite before adding Elixer.

It probably varies from bowler to bowler.  I only have 1 ball I've used with and without the elixer, Buzzsaw Cherry pearl.  On this ball, it seemed to give me 1-2' more length, also had to move 1 board left on the approach.

All my other equipment was treated to the Elixer before I used them, can't really compare the difference.  Since it doesn't take much Elixer to cover the ball, I would recommend applying it to one of your balls and give it a try.  This will give you and idea of whether you would need to alter the coverstock to maintain your current reaction.

As far as the carrydown situation, I have never noticed any problems.  Again, try it and adjust the surface as needed.

Another trick I learned is to just recoat the track when the ball fails the oil test.  Makes the Elixer go a lot farther.

Doc originally claimed the Elixer would last for about 20-25 games.  In my case, it seems like I can get 50-75 games.  Probably due to my low rev count and the lanes I bowl on.  Equipment doesn't track up fast.

I echo and support 10's comments. My experience with Elixir has been the same as he has stated.

Ric - If you have any specific questions you can message me.

SrKegler - If you get that many games on an application I may have to start charging more or water it down. LOL  Good to hear you are getting that much protection.
