What's your favorite coverstock finish?
« on: March 30, 2005, 03:54:02 AM »
Of course this is going to vary depending on the shot, but for a general medium/heavy oil house shot???

I used to be a huge fan of 600 grit wet sanded with a high gloss polish.  It seemed to be enough to get the ball through the heads, yet strong enough to recover on the backend...  I still use this finish on some of my skid/flip equipment, but what I noticed is just that... it gets a little flippy and sometimes hard to control.  Recently I have been playing around with higher grit wet sands...  I have really come to like 2000 grit matte finish.  It seems to have the same characteristics as the 600 grit polish, but a smoother reaction...  so currently, I have to say that 2000 grit matte is my "favorite" finish....

800 grit, high gloss polish. It makes everything I have smooth and predictable and it allows me to play any part of the lane with the great amount of energy the ball saves.

I've had the most luck with 600-800 grit with a light polish, especially on our THS synthetics.

I don't have one favorite.  Heavy oil balls are typically 600 grit dull + Doc's Elixir.  Dry lane balls are sanded to 1500/2000, then polished to 3000 (highest grit polish I have).  In the middle I sand to 800 or 1000, then polish to 600, 1000, or 1500.  My Thing is sanded to 1000 grit with no polish.  I might have to keep something at 1500-2000 dull like TrimMan.  Sounds like a good lane reader with no over reaction.

I really like 1000 grit finish, no polish; this has really been working for me the last three months.

I also don't have a favorite.
Everything is different and I "usually" know what each ball will do.

i tend to try new balls wetsanded 2,000 grit. they tend to roll more evenly and i get a better read that way. i'll make surface adjustments as necessary for a particular ball.
