Maroon 3M Scotch Brite Pads
« on: August 19, 2008, 11:43:16 AM »
Does anyone know if the maroon 3M Finishing Pad #7414NA is the same grit as the maroon 3M General Purpose Hand Pad #7447 (320-400 grit)?  Thanks.

I think so, I just used a Red(Maroon) 3M pad and it said 400 Grit on it.

on edit: needed my Pain to start a little earlier on the lane.

The 3M people responded to my email inquiry, and confirmed that the maroon #7414NA pad is the same material as the maroon #7447 pad.  However, according to them, the grit for both of these pads is actually 280-320, and not 320-400 as listed in the FAQ section here.  Their response was:

"Thank you for your inquiry.  We appreciate hearing from you.  The materials in question are the same however the grit is 280 - 320.  Your interest in and use of 3M products is appreciated."

If some maroon pads actually say 400 on them, someone at 3M is confused.  Either way, they are close enough for me for my needs.

Not sure where the FAQ got their info from. When I first queried 3M about their nylon pads, they told me it was 320 grit. period. I listed 2 things when I originally posted their grit levels. One was range eveyrone was assuming and, two, the exact number that 3M quoted me. Off that now, 3M is quoting you a range: 280 - 320 grit.

charlest,

sounds like a little confusion at 3M or they're hedging their bets now on pad ratings.  I've always used the grit numbers that you have provided (along with lots of other valuable info), and will continue to do so, as they are an excellent baseline for coverstock work.  Your wealth of knowledge in this sport is very informative, very helpful, and much appreciated.  For my use, I'll consider the maroon pads to be 320 grit for my resurfacing efforts.
