This time using a new Track Rule, I found that the OOB finish at 1000 grit abralon was too strong for the lanes at home, the ball rolled out too soon. Fresh THS with 42 units in the middle tapering to 5 units at board 5, buffed to 42 feet on AMF synthetic about 5 years old. Took the ball through white scotch brite to 2000 abralon. 2000 made the ball be very speed sensitive and hand position specific - any variation in either became an obvious error.
I decided that I would seek a happy medium. I recently read here of a fellow who used clean and dull with alcohol to clean, so I thought that I would give that a try. I gave the ball a light going over with 1000 abralon first then I applied alcohol to a sponge that came with a blue scotch brite pad attached. This pad comes from the grocery store 2 cleaning sponges for a buck. These sponges have a small amount of antibacterial soap already in them. I thought that would be O.K. because soap is a degreaser also. To this I added the clean and dull and alcohol. The blue pad is rated at 1000 grit. I applied this to 6 sides following each side with a towel dampened with alcohol and then I dried well with a clean dry micro fiber towel. Finally I did six sides again with the white scotch-brite, using alcohol as a lubricant, and drying with the dry towel. The end was a surface that was almost as bright as a marble - slicker that the 2000 grit abralon that was applied using only water as a lubricant. I have no idea what the end grit is. It looks like a high polish.
Lesson - the combination of the soap, alcohol and clean and dull made a super degreaser that combined with the surface oil in the ball, was a super lubricant. This caused the scotch brites to float and polish. This was just too slick so I quickly re-did six sides with the blue pad, which did take a bit of the shine off. This finish is not 1000 grit. I suspect that it is between 1500 and 2500. I will bowl with this to see the results, but, I am expecting to find that I will be better off using water a lubricant to arrive at a known known grit/finish.
