I just got a ball spinner (vertex 1/2 hp) and I was wondering what was the best way to apply polish. I tried a towel but I didn't get a very high gloss shine. I was using storm xtra shine that came with steps 1,2,3 and cleaner. I was gonna get a wool buffing pad because I heard that was better. Thanks for the help in advance.

What ball were you trying to shine,& what grit was it sanded to before polishing. Some of the particle balls are hard to shine.

Go to WalMart / KMart and buy a few cloth diapers. They are the best for a good polish, I start with a white loomed towel and finish with the diaper.

I was trying to polish my sling blade, I hit finished with storm's step 3 and then with the xtra shine. It was alright but I expected a higher gloss polish from it.

The pearl cover on that ball should look like a marble after polishing. You may need to find a ball spinner to use or take it to your pro shop.

I am using a spinner to do it. That's why I was disappointed in the end result.

Buy some throw away soft cloths if you can order from your local office supply the order number is CHI 8007 they come in packs of 40. I have been using these to clean and polish for about 4 years now, the mom and pop office supplies are going to be able to get these from SP Richards there distributor. Also some janatorial supplies have them like Waxie or some like that. They cost about 6 bucks and are the best and do not stick to the ball like ohter cloths will.

Sorry tommymo, I got confused with the other poster. If you are using a spinner, I don't know what the problem is, but I don't think it's the cloth. I polish my equipment all the time & use whatever rag I have available. An old T-shirt works great. I copied the following from the ball reviews section, so I know you should be able to shine it up good.

I have a
mirror finish on it with Storm Xtra Shine topped off with Black
Magic. When other equipment has forced me in further than my
comfort zone, I can move back out with the Sling Blade and ride
what's left of the oil line down to the breakpoint and get a
strong, but not jumpy arc into the pocket with excellent hit. It
even handles light carrydown.

I use a Mcquires (sp) auto polishing spounge to apply polish and flannel polishing cloths to polish the ball. I found mine in the automotive dept. at Wal-Mart and all are washable. Rinse the spounge by hand and machine wash the flannel cloths.

This is kind of hard to understand, since after using Step 3, XTra Shine should hardly be necessary. After Step 3, assuming, of course, you started with Step 1 and then used Step 2, Xtra SHine would probably not get any higher gloss than Step 3. It should look like a marble, as someone already said.

Perhaps, you ought to give us the whole procedure that you followed.

Note: Since it's a Hammer, it might have been safer to use Ebonite products to polish the ball. I've often found that to be the case: use the manufacturer's supplies to manipulate the surface. HOwever, I will often mix and match with good results; only the results are not always as expected. Until you tell us precisely what you did, it can be hard to know what might have gone wrong.

Sand it back down to 220 grit, using Track's Clean and Dull as a lubricant; then sand it to 320 grit, then to 400 grit. (I suggest using C & D because it does seem to extract some oil and is the strongest ball cleaner made for bowlingballs.) Then re-apply Brunswick's High Gloss polish to get it back to out-of-the-box condition. The sanding to 220 grit should get rid of most of the Black Magic.

My experience has been to be EXTREMELY cautious when applying it and to always apply a very light coat of it. I have found that anything more than a light coat seems to clog the ball pores, in manner of speaking, like car wax does. When a resin ball is not allowed to absorb oil, its hook is reduced by a LOT.

Theoretically Black Magic is a gritless polish. Brunswick's HG polish is also grit-less and can be used in extra quantities to get more gloss and more shine, without clogging the pores. I still would NOT use it to get extra gloss. What I would suggest doing to get more length is to sand the ball finer before applying Brunswick's polish. All Brunswick pearls are currently sanded to 400 grit before they apply their polish. So sanding it to 600 or 1000 grit (plus polish) will get more length, and less backend.
