Title: need length on Powerkoil 18 cover
Post by: Necroshine on May 30, 2006, 12:20:31 PM: I have a Red Alert Black Ice for light oil conditions. My summer league I just joined has a fresh patchy/dry shot to start which breaks down into dry by the last game. My ball is burning up a bit early and having a weak reaction on the back end.

I need to add roughly 5 feet to the length before it starts revving up. Could a polish work or would a resurfacing help more? or both ?

Post by: DON DRAPER on May 30, 2006, 10:30:18 PM: red alert black ice ? i don't recognize this ball. brunswick made a danger zone black ice---this was a polished, pearlized version of powrkoil 18. the danger zone red alert was also polished but was a solid version of powrkoil 18. either way, this ball was not really meant for light oil conditions unless you have very high ball speed and/or loft the ball a good deal. if you must use it try wetsanding it very fine---a 4,000 grit abralon pad wouldn't hurt. then apply a coat of brunswicks rough buff( basically rubbing compound ). then apply several coats of brunswicks factory finish high gloss polish. good luck.

Post by: dizzyfugu on May 31, 2006, 02:14:07 AM: I made good experience with a high gloss polish (Brunswick stuff) on a 1.500 grit wet sanded basis on acouple of balls - but with some length I also got a sharper breakpoint, sometimes too nervous for short patterns.

My tip: You can also try to change your release a little bit. Adding speed is always helpful (just hold the ball higher in your approach position and maybe get 1' further away from the foul line), and you can break back your wrist a little - this also "kills" the hook and retains energy. I had very god resulots this way with my trusty Trauma, a ball IMHO quite comparable to your Red Alert.

Seems that my Vegas driller insisted i needed a weight hole to be legal and my new guy weighed it and said it will be legal if we fill it. He said this will give me a a delayed reaction. He's also taking it up to 4000 grit and polish too.

He said the alley I bowl at is known for being a desert, and he did well using a ball with a pancake block in city tourney's there. Come fall, I'll be heading to the other AMF alley where he's at. A bit slicker.

Cost me a whopping 10 bucks too.

I agree.

Since most Brunswick pearls are 400 grit plus a high gloss polish with no grit change, in order to get more length (and less backend), sand it to 800 to 1500 grit (depending on how much length you want/need), then polish it with Brunswick's High Gloss polish. If using a polish with grit in it, like Storm's Xtra Shine, sand it to 800 grit, then apply the polish.

Got ball back this afternoon and bowled a game tonight. Worked really well. Lanes were fried , ball got used up late mid lane and a weak backend. I was kinda happy. This should now do well on spotty/light conditions were the ball won't die on me midlane.
Talked to a kid next lane over about the lane conditions. Told me if one guys oils its really dry, and the other guy oils that night its Medium-Heavy oil. Oh well, gotta love the consistancy , huh ....
