Title: Need some help....
Post by: stormdamage on April 15, 2012, 11:40:25 AM
Hey guys, looking at one of two options. Thinking about taking an older solid reactive and changing the surface to a polished finish for the lanes I usually bowl on. Is this a better option than buying a pearl reactive my friend has for sale and having it refitted? I don't mess with coverstocks, so I'm not sure what to expect if I alter the surface. Any help is appreciated.

I would think either/or would work.  I personally prefer a polished solid myself.

Either should work out well.  However if the ball you have is an older solid and you just need extra length, polish should do the job.  Plus, it would save you some cash from having to plug and redrill a ball.

My Arsenal (as of February 2012)
Heavy Oil:  Roto Grip Defiant: 3000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Track 919C: 3000 AB
Medium-Heavy Oil: Ebonite Vital Energy: 4000 AB
Medium Oil: Track 505T: 4000 AB
Medium-Light Oil: Hammer Brick: 2000 polished

Get a hybrid cover.

Thanks guys. Will probably just polish up the solid. Cobalt, I have a Virtual Energy that I've thrown out there but for whatever reason it doesn't react well to the shot that is out there. I'm not sure if it's the leverage drilling or just the fact that it's such a strong ball to start with. Pearl stuff works the best on this shot. Solids just jump to hard off the breakpoing. My Ace does pretty well for about a game and a half then it gets jumpy too.

What is the cover at on the solid you intend to polish? How does it react  now?  Need to know this to tell you what the best adjustment would be.
If the solid if too jumpy, polish can add to or take away from the problem.  A polish with grit can give you more length and smooth out the backend. A polish with no grit will likely make the ball more angular on the back.

Consider 4000 no polish or stepping up to 4000 no polish 500/1000/2000/4000. Maybe try up to 2000 first and see what reaction you get. If it rolls too early or is too strong on the back go up to 4000. Add polish if needed for more length and or angle in the back.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Most things we like, we don't need. Most things we need, we don't like. Don't confuse your likes with your needs.

The ball has a 1000 grit Matte finish and is drilled stacked with the pin dead even to right of the ring finger. The ball is pretty smooth rolling but when it hits the dry it's pretty jumpy to the pocket. It's got plenty of energy left at the pins but I'm just trying to determine the best way to play down and in with it. First game down and in is no problem, after that it's either move inside or throw it harder. Throwing it harder gets tiring by the end of game 2. Moving inside isn't my strength either though. lol
