Need some help please!!
« on: October 11, 2004, 10:24:44 AM »
I need a little help.I have a storm ace,and like all of my balls I wipe the oil off after every shot I throw. Here's my problem. I want to keep the ball clean,as new as possible.I usually polish all of my equipment or I'll use rubbing alcohol on them.Obviously when I use the polish it goes longer, and when I use the alcohol is grabs more.I want to be able to clean my ace without changing what the ball is doing now.I have about 12 games on it now,and I'd usually clean it by now.Does anyone know what to use to keep it looking and acting new without changing the surface at all? I never worried about this before, but I am getting such a great ball read right now that I don't want to compromise it by using polish or rubbing alcohol. Thanks for the help!!!

Maybe docs magic elixir I have no personal experience with it but supposedly it protects your ball from oil makes it skid a bit farther and should enhance the life of your ball.

I have heard that stuff is good.but I don't want to apply polish.I am using it on a 44ft shot.It works really well now.I am achieving a great shot and I don't want to compromise it by either having skid more or grab earlier. Thanks for the help,I appreciate it.

I don't think it is like polish in that it just skids farther I remember reading it does skid farther but it revs up faster and give you more backend.

..um....not sure where you got your info but rubbing alchohol doesnt change the reaction...at all. So continue using it, it wont make a difference. Or use something like simple green, thats what I use.

Just clean the ball after every session at the alley with simplegreen and water mixed 50/50. It cleans well and won't affect the cover or reaction.

Doc's Magic Elixer does not alter the surface of the ball it just keeps oil from soaking into the pours of the cover. Some people have claimed an increase in back end movement but I have never had a reaction change. If you want a product that will keep it at the 1000 grit sheen I suggest Track's "Clean and Sheen". Grey scotch bright should keep it at that surface also. I would use "Clean and Sheen" after every session and a grey scotch bright every 4 sessions or so. Regardless the surface will change over time without proper maintenance, dull balls get shinier and polished balls get duller.

The Elixir is a product that does not change the grit of the surface of a ball.  It does stop oil absorption and can help a ball stay relatively clean through the front with a saving of energy on the backend.

Most of the time on a 44 foot shot the ball will require some surface.  However if the ball grabs too early the result is weak tens or other single pin leaves.  The Elixir can help you get through the heads a little cleaner without having to polish the ball.

Trust me if I use alcohol on my ball I get more bite. It'll grab earlier, which is great if I'm on a super heavy sport shot.

Hmm....I've never heard of alcohol giving more bite...

Are you SURE it's not acetone?  Acetone softens the core giving it more bite (and that's why it's illegal).  I'm not calling you a liar or anything, but I've personally never heard anything about alcohol giving more bite.

Doc's Elixir is great...!  I don't really notice any difference in ball reaction since applying it.  There is a little more 'pop' in the backends (energy retention?), but it's not all that significant.  The main difference is that it keeps the oil from soaking in.  Cleaning the ball is a breeze!  I simply use a microfiber towel between shots, and a dilution of Simple Green (1:1 with water) after 3 games.  Doc's Elixir, a microfiber towel, and some Simple Green is probably the best investment in order to help prolong the life of a bowling ball.

It's either mental or you grab the shot after cleaning.  A quick cleaning with rubbing alcohol won't change the surface or make the ball hook more.  Simple Green or the citrus degreasers (not polishes), diluted 1:1 if you like, will clean the grime from your ball and not change the surface.

icetink (microfiber towel) and Inverted 1 (clean, non-oily surface hooks more) are also spot on.

The reason alcohol works is because it cleans off any residue left on the shell.

It does pick up oil and along with that it floats everything else off the surface.  i.e. breaks surface tension.  So removal of this "stuff" gives the cover a fresh start.  It is going to bite the lane more.  Problem is the change is often times too significant for most bowlers to recognize and adapt to on the lanes.

The Elixir also helps by not picking up as much oil on the lanes so you are able to stay on your line a little longer.  i.e. won't have to jump to find fresh oil like a 2-1 move and so on.
