I added a new chart showing the six (6) sides of a bowling ball to my "Bowling Stuff" page.

The Bowlingball Sides (PDF) is a chart showing what is refered to as "The 6 sides of a bowling ball"

And how about the other hundreds of "sides" that can be created by orienting the ball in other directions. I know I'm in the vast minority, but I still think it is more accurate to think of sanding the complete ball in three different directions. But it is a very good drawing that fully illustrates how to sand a ball, no matter how we refer to it, and I thank you for that and the other valuable information you share with us on your web site. -- JohnP

In what way is that not three different directions?
You have Sides 1-2, 3-4, 5-6 each pair constitute a different direction.

You could also say it was six directions. Because sides 1-3-5 would be sanded in the opposite direction of their opposite side 2-4-6.

Yes the ball could be oriented in a unlimited number of ways, to create as many sides as you wish. But this chart gives a beginner a basic starting point and is a standard method.

Didn't know what a controversial thing this was! Over at allbowling they said "The six sides should be in relation to the track, not the holes"

It is three different directions, that's my point. IMHO there's only one side on which to sand a bowling ball and that's the outside.

I suppose you could call it six different directions, but the sanding lines are all oriented the same, that's why I say three.

You're absolutely right, and I tried to make that clear in my original post.

I've always seen it the way you drew it. But to influence ball reaction the final sanding lines are often oriented either parallel or perpendicular to the track. See the information on the Jayhawk site, link below, and yes, they call them sides also. When I sand a ball, I only sand one direction (OK, or two sides) for the lower grits, then either two or three directions for the final grit. -- JohnP

The chart wasn't about fine tuning ball reaction with those sanding techniques. That's why there's nothing about it on the chart.It was just for general sanding/resurfacing.

I already knew about the jayhawk link (I also have the old BTM issue with that info in it.) about sanding to get a targeted reaction. And that was what the discussion over at allbowling was about that I referred to.

Though over there it wasn't about sanding a ball for certain reaction at first.
That came up later. Then a Haus machine got involved....

Oh well everyone can do what they want with the chart. or they can go to the donkee site and use theirs.

It's a nice chart and it shows the "sides" that some do/did not understand, now they can see those "sides". I think what JohnP is saying that we all have our different ways of getting to those "sides" and our own opinions of how many or where they are. Not knocking your chart, or at least that's how I took his post.
