OIl removal advice needed
« on: October 14, 2005, 03:50:57 AM »
I have heard people on Br talking about removing oil from a ball by soaking it in hot water. What exactly should I do to get the best results as I think my equipment needs de-oiling.

Any help would be most appreciated......
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

There are many different ways..First off the best way to help in this is to wipe down you ball after each shot, and then clean them after every game with cleaner from your local pro shop, or some of the many home remedies out there.. (nother sugject all together..lol) most local pro shops have a rejuvenator oven..some wrap them in towels and put them in the sun.. soaking in warm water with dawn or some detergent is another way.. getting a 5 gallon bucket with cat litter is another..and you'll hear some talk about baking them in your home oven at 150* at 1/2 hr intervals till nothing is comen out...  most that I have heard used is the soaking method and the cat litter method witch works well..  I personally used my home oven at 150* at 1/2 hr intervals with my Power Groove.. tell ya what.. it took the oil out of the ball, then got it resurfaced and it was almost good as new..  BUT.. that is not recommended...

Main thing is wipe it down.. and keep it clean.. It will keep oil from soaking in as much..  hope this helps.. hope more will chime in..    GOOD LUCK..

I always wipe the ball after each shot and clean it afterwards. The method I'm most interested in is the home "Soaking in Water" option as my funds are v.low.

Thanks

Then try the cat litter aproach.. get yourself a 5 gollon bucket.. get a plastic bowl or something to get the ball off the bottom, cover it with cat litter.. leave it in for a few days.. they say it realy works..   Soaking.. from what I've heard here..  hot water in sink.. not to hot.. add some dawn detirgent.. let sit and soak for awhile, pull it out and wipe it off and repeat a few times as needed..

I've tried soaking a dull ball in hot water, and a scoop of oxy clean. The ball was a lot duller than when it went in the water. Also it felt very tacky after being wiped down, and applying some "clean and dull" to it. Don't know if this will work for polish balls though. Hope this help a bit.

i would suggest taking it to the pro shop and getting the Rejuvenator (SP?) done, or using the EB hook again system...

you can also purchase the Hook Again system for yourself

Get some CPR and do that, if it doesn't do what you want, then take it to your pro shop and have them use the RJ.

A bucket, very warm(not hot) soappy water, 15 minutes in, let the ball cool to room temp.  Reheat water, repeat 2-3 times.  Cheap and easy.

if you live in a hot climate, just leave the ball in the trunk of your car. I swear every summer i would take my ball out and just see the oil dripping off it.

But you still have to be careful not to let the ball surface go over 150 degrees. That is theoretically the point at which the plastcizers, that make urethane into resin, start seeping out of the ball. Under 150 degrees, it's oil coming to the surface.

Ok tell how a ball will absorb oil but will not absorb the water that you are soaking it in to get the oil out?

water will condensate(unsure on the spelling), become gas when its warmed. oil doesnt do that.

Another method is to put the ball in a sauna. Dont turn on the heat to much, let the ball be there about 3 hours or so. Depends on how much oil it have soaked.
