Ball cleaner and polish
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:18:50 PM »
Anyone got any thoughts on the best way to polish or clean a ball that will get the same results as the local pro-shop ball spinner. Not all of us can afford a ball spinner for our presonnal use, and was told by my pro-shop guy that there was good Ebinite polishes for matte finish and high gloss finish bowling balls, but I'm trying to figure out a good way to apply these without a spinner. Car buffer, shoe polisher, buff-a-ball sling?

Having tried what you would like to do (polishing, re-surfacing, sanding, etc) without a spinner, I can tell you that, with respect to the difference in both the effort required and the results obtained, there is no comparison whatsoever. A spinner is essential. I had spent hours trying to just change the surface of a solid resin and a solid urethane; then I spent more hours trying to polish a ball. Compared to a spinner, the results were pathetic.

With a spinner, the above operations take from 2 - 8 minutes tops. I really meant hours and hours above.

There are a few liquids that you can use by hand, IF, and only if, the ball's surace is near to where you want be. Ebonite's Matte finish will take a ball's surface to 1200 grit, BUT only if you are already around 800 - 1000 grit already. Actually the same is true when using a spinner. Track's Cleam and Smooth takes a ball to 1500 grit, IF the ball starts either at 1200 grit or 2000 grit.

Track's Delayed Reaction can be applied to a dull ball to add a light shine and reduce the backend hook and add alittle length.

Some polishes, notably the ones with abrasive of grit in them (like Storm's Xtra Shine), can be applied by hand, but, again, the results will be NOTHING comapred to what can VERY EASILY be achieved with a spinner.

I sincerely suggest NOT buying that next premium ball and save the money for a spinner. It can be an invaluable aid.

Some of the other surface adjustment products designed for use w/out a spinner are those made by Neo-Tac.  Outside of the liquid sandpaper, these products don't change the surface grit of the ball, but will clean, polish, delay reaction, and/or increase reaction.  I have used all of them before and had very good results.

strapper,

Neo-Tac's Renew-it says it changes the surface to 2000 grit. That made me uncomfortable and for the most part I stopped using it. I know it has both cleaner and polish in it. That, I don't like also. If I want cleaner, I use q cleaner. If I want to polish a ball, I use a polish.

Was that Renew-it or Restore-it?  I could be wrong (never used renew-it on dull equipment.. so it could very well change the surface grit), but I thought Renew-it cleaned and left a tacky finish and Restore-it was the cleaner/polish all built into one...

I have used Storm's Reacta Shine on numerous ocassions with great success applied by hand and shine with a clean soft rag. I'm certainly not saying that it does as good a job as a spinner but it does good and it works great no problems with it

Restore-it must be a new one; never heard of it. I'm sure it was Renew-it that said it made the polish/grit level 2000.

I have Renew-it (polish + cleaner), Control-it (equivalent of Track's Delayed Reaction), Hook-it (cleaner) and Liquid Sandpaper (don't know the grit).
