Polish comparison and procedure recommendations needed
« on: October 05, 2005, 08:20:21 PM »
Hi there,

Brunswick recommends a 400 grit sanding before applying high gloss polish (since it is the only one available around here...). I am planning to use the stuff on some worn-down Storm balls, which have OOB a 1.500 grit surface before polishing them.
Is the 1.500 grit prep just special for Storm's own high gloss polish, can I sand them to 1.500 grit and apply Brunswick's polish to get the OOB condition or would you recommend a 400 surface before applying the Brusnwick polish?

Thanks a lot in advance!

If you're trying to duplicate the OOB reaction on the Storm balls, sand to 1500 grit then apply the polish.  Probably won't duplicate the OOB since it's not the same polish, but should come closer than sanding to 400.  --  JohnP

Hi John, thank you very much. Thought the same and I will give the 1.500 prep on the Storms (a Trauma and an Eraser Particle Pearl) a try.

NOTE: (I believe) you're making an invalid assumption.

Brunswick's pearls are finished from the factory that way: 400 grit sanding, followed by an application of their High Gloss polish. They tell you that is the way to restore a pearl to the factory finish. They also recommend you can use use finer grits to reduce the overall strength of the ball reaction, to any degree you wish.

I agree with JohnP. If you want to emulate most of Storm's pearlized balls: sand to 1500 grit, then apply Brunswick's High Gloss. It's equivalent, not identical to Storm's finish. Do try Storm's XXtra Polish, it works and is good stuff; not too expensive. Unlike Brunswick's, you can apply as much as you like to get the level of polish you feel most comfortable with.

The sanding grit and type polish and polishing method varys from user to user. What the factory says doesn't always work. The factory specs are only a guideline to start. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. Every person has to find out thru trial and error what works best for them. I used to sand to 400 grit like Brunswick does/says to do and polish with Ultimate Quick Cut Polish and/or Columbia 2000 Grit Polish. I have since had better performance from my balls REGARDLESS OF BRAND by sanding parallel to the track with a 500 Grit Abralon Pad and polishing with 3M Finesse It II. This polish contains no waxes or silicones. You can polish light, medium, heavy, etc. or whatever you want to get the results you need with this polish.

Thank you all for thoughts and input. My difficulty is that I just can get Brunswicks polish and Rough Buff around here, so I will have to try it out. Additionally, it will be the first attempt at home with a friend's (new) spinner, I have NO idea how everything will work out and how the balls will react afterward. There is much guessing, but I am confident that it will work.
