Spinner helps, but is not necessary, You will get better/more even results, it is quicker and less "muscle consuming", but you can do it by hand.
To apply polish, I use a cotton cloth (old underwear is great) or a paper tissue. To polish, I take a fresh cotton cloth and rob, rub, rub, in circular motions, turning the ball around all the time to get an even distribution and finish. When the complete ball is done, I put the ball in a linen cloth, and I additionally "swing" it like in a seesaw to get the surface more even. Additional rubbing with a cotton cloth helps, too.
I also tried recently a battery powered 18V power drill with a sheep fur polish plate - very nice result. Much quicker, very even, but the sheep fur is quite soft, so I will try to build a cotton "cushion" for the next attempt. I think this will yield even better results.
