No spinner is necessary (easier on the hands and arms if you have access to one). With a little good old fashioned elbow grease one can do a pretty good job without a ball spinner. Make sure that you are consistent in your sanding methods. Rotate the ball while sanding while applying a consistent pressure of the sanding material equally . Using the hand method, don't rush it, take your sweet time. The spinner method saves time, no doubt. But I actually prefer the hand method, it is quite a craft, and damn good therapy for this crazy world.
I highly recommend Abralon Pads over Sandpaper and scotch brite. Abralon pads are especially favored when doing the coverstock sanding by hand. They are the perfect size to fit in the palm of most hands, are consistent on the surface of the ball, and last a long time.
The main thing you will be losing when doing sanding without a spinner is exact consistency, and time. Hand method is time consuming but nice to do things without a machine for once. I have had pretty good luck and great scores without the use of a spinner; but I'm a hefty muscular person. YMMV. What the heck, give her a try, nothing to lose everything to gain.
