Old Salt dispensing Valuable advice!
« on: December 15, 2004, 09:47:00 AM »
No not me!  I'm too young to be called "old Salt".

Recently have been watching a real good older bowler tear it up relatively in my old Tuesday league.  I mean this guy is averaging ner 217 and next lefty high is like 206.

He was once on tour and said the shot at this house while long is of a very thin volume.  So he says one needs Hook at the back, very little midlane and push!

He says, so the usual answer is polish.  Old guru says, "Polish helps push the ball thru the heads and mids but in the back it will jump more."

"SOLID" he says  just doesn't work here not enough oil to retain energy"

Lastly he says is the secret to these overreactive midlanes.

"THe OLD Lustre king"  "Put a ball in there, wax it to a high sheen.  Make sure it's a strong ball(He uses the Total Annhilation, pin over ring and mass bias on track to reduce midlane) and then throw away!"  "The ball will read slower in the mids and back and then hook versus polish where it will JUMP".

The high average for a righty the last two years on this pattern has been 211 versus righty 229 each year.  He's going at a 217 clip and may get to 220.

Interesting!

I know several high average, high rev players who swear by the old Lustre King. They claim it gets you length while maintaining the back end reaction.

If you can be sure that the Lustre King uses polish and not wax, then yes.

If you are not 100% sure, don't use it!

Wax converts resin balls, for all practical purposes, into polished urethane balls.

Tony speak''um big truth. Although I waxed a few in my day,..and on dry lanes it don't take long to wear off most of the wax,...and the ones I've had went right back to hooking,..once they tracked up,..Todays polishes work much better and last longer.

Yeah, but you might not get your ball back from the ball return.

I got cut a new one by a head mechanic a few years back for using a plastic ball on which I'd put a nice coat of Turtle Wax.

YEP,..wax will really slick'em up,..especially the spare balls. I do not recommend auto wax or any other waxes on todays hi-tech bowling balls. That's one of the reasons that very few centers have Lustre-Kings anymore,..sure there's still a few,...but most are dynosaurs now.
But what Luckys "old salt" friend has done is understandable. Take a strong ball, and take away it's surface, and keep it's guts,..works for him.
