Refresh/Polish Help
« on: June 18, 2014, 10:11:48 AM »
I have a Hammer Epidemic with about 25 or so games on it and looking to refresh the surface a bit. I just got my first order from Valentino, based on all the great things I hear about there products. From all the reading I've done I should put down a layer of Resurrection, and then some Snake Oil? Or should I sand a little? As of last Fridays practice it was breaking early, and over shooting the pocket (sorry I am new to this level of ball care , and don't know the lingo). I want to calm it down a little. I just put some Powerhouse Factory Finish on it before the last practice, but was still too strong. Or should I just apply the polish over the FF to give it length? I do have a spinner and all the stuff to do whatever, like I said I am new to this level of ball care. Any insight is greatly appreciated!

If you have a spinner, just do trial and error until you get the reaction you want

If you are using FF and the ball is still too much, then there really isnt anything else you can do to make the ball go longer.  It just means that there isnt enough volume of oil on the lane surface to help get the ball down the lane.  Simple as that.  You cant take a ball that is too strong and "just make it weaker".

You could re-drill it to raise the RG and lower the differential, making it a weaker ball, but you can only polish the coverstock to add length to allow it to handle less oil. The dded length will increase he backend, making it flippier and harder to control.

You may also use a polish with a slip agent in it to increase the length, reduce the backend and reduce the overall hook, but it would be a shame to weaken such an excellent ball to do what other ball are designed to handle normally.

I'd suggest saving this ball for when there is enough oil for it to work properly and use a milder ball to handle what you're seeing now.

The last step before factory finish polish from hammer on the Epidemic was 2000, you can take it down to 2000 then go to 4000 and apply a polish coat on it, it will go longer than before. If its still hooking to early you can add a coat of a slip agent over the first polish coat

Thanks for all the input. I've  messing with this ball on and off for a couple months. Just got back to the sport not to long ago. At one house I get a mild reaction, and at the other house I go to (mostly) this thing turns left like its in NASCAR. There I am usually the first one on a fresh lane.

When I started I brought this ball, after a few weeks, I thought it was maybe to much for the oil. So I took my Spike (blue\orange) and got no reaction on the same stuff. That's when I got mad, came home that night bought my spinner and different cleaners, polishes, etc.

Like Charlest said maybe this ball needs to sit awhile, I got others. Well thanks again, I am new to this forum and will surely have more questions

Taking it to 4000 instead of 2000 before applying polish won't truly make any difference. Most polishes takes balls finished anywhere from 1000 grit to 4000 grit to somewhere around 5500 grit. The laser scanner has proved that in the BJI ball reviews.

I understand your point Charlest and you are totally right, but they were using an average grit, with surface scanner you can actually see how different are the grits at the bowlers track (and every other inch of the ball including the grit on the logos, scratches, etc.),with that being said if you go to 4000 after using a 2000 and then you polish you will smooth out the valleys and peaks of the bowlers track (also you can achieve this with some polishes that alter surface, like slip agents that are designed to fill the valleys and smooth out the peaks of the bowling balls) maybe it will not increase the grit overall (as an average) but for sure the grit no. will increase in the bowlers track providing more lenght because you will be smoothing out the texture of the ball.

So basically it will read an average of 5500 but in the track it will read around 4000 or 3800, so if you  remove the texture of the valleys and peaks the ball probably will read around 5510 but the main change will be reflected at the bowlers track where it's gonna  be closer to the 5500 average its mentioned on the article.

Once again Thank You All for the posts. I was thinking about this all night at work, then this morning saw a guy I know that was a pretty competitive bowler up until a couple years ago. I was telling him my dilemma, he asked me to kind of draw it out for him. He looked at me and said "You Dumba**" Lol. Like I said in the original post, I am new to the lingo and terms.

He said my length sounds fine, and to him it sounds like my problem is in the backend, and that maybe the fresh polish made it flippy. Then I told him what Charlest said " The added length will increase the backend, making it flippier and harder to control".  So he said to knock some of the polish off, and see where I am at then. Am I on the right path?

I apologize for asking my question without knowing how to ask it. Until late March, the last time I rolled a ball was in my last league in 1998, a lot has changed. Thanks again everyone!
