How do you remove the fine scratches that appear after using a lower grit of sandpaper, like when you are resurfacing? I tried a rubbing compound, but they are still there.

Change sanding directions each time you change to a finer grit. You can also vary the speed, hand pressure, and amount of water you use. I like lots of water as it will act as a "lubricant" against the ball surface. It just takes some practice (trial and error) to find out what works best for you.

Only one way...bring the surface of the ball down below the scratches with fine grit wet sandpaper or abralon pad.  If you don't want to take off that much surface just put your ball on your spinner and go over it with a scrub brush...it won't get rid of the scratches, but it'll clean them out and you won't be able to see them unless you look really close.

Don't use sandpaper anymore...

Just use Abralon or Scotch Brite pads...they accomplish the same thing with less damage to the ball.

Scratches, in and of themselves, are NOT damage to the ball. All abrasives "scratch" the ball. That is what abrasives do. As you go from one level (let's say, 600 grit) to another (let's say, 800 grit), the scratches get finer and finer. Depending on your eyesight and the amount of light available, you may or may not be able to see the scratches. If you use the same pressure and and you use fresh abrasive, be it sandpaper, Abralon, Scotch-Brite nylon pads or Trizact pads, each succesively finer level of abrasive will leave finer and finer levels of scratches.

Normally, until you reach approximately 2000 grit US/4000 grit Abralon, you should be able to see the scratch marks. At that 2000/4000 grit level, it may be harder to see them with the naked eye.

If you remove them, you may not be at the grit level you want to achieve!!!

Polishes and rubbing ccompunds can remove these scratches, but again, you MAY no longer be at the level you want/need.
