Charlest is right. Once play starts any ball, including the ones still in the bag, cannot be altered. They can be cleaned by an "approved during competition" only cleaner. USBC has a list. Check it out. If you see during practice that you may want the ball your throwing altered or one that you may use later altered, then that's the time to do it. In our house most of the open bowling is on lanes 1-12 or so. They are usually driest come league time or don't take as long to dry out. Our league posts lane assignments on the web 2 weeks ahead of time so I have somewhat of an idea before hand what to bring as far as coverstock types.
