Renew-it as a polish?
« on: October 01, 2004, 06:25:11 PM »
I'm just wondering if anyone uses renew-it to polish their balls after they resurface it to a certain grit of sandpaper.  I don't mean by hand either, I'd be using a ball spinner and towel to apply the renew-it.  I could also use Compound 400, but I'm leery of using that since it may alter the 800 grit surface that would precede the polishing step.

I do.
Just used it, as a test, on an Ultimate, which comes 800 grit dull/matte, and on a Rush, which comes 1000 grit dull/matte. Haven't tried them yet. Once I do, I will decide then how to change them, if it is necessary.

Renew-it supposedly can take a ball to as much as 2000 grit. Where you take it depends on how much you use, how hard you press and for how long. By my estimation, I tried to take these balls to what I estimate is around 1200 grit polished.

Cool, I'm resurfacing a friends Vicious and didn't want to stray too far from the OOB finish when I polished it.  It has the same coverstock as the new Switch Blade, but the OOB on the SB looks much more polished than the Vicious ever did.

Thanks

J_Mac,

you just have to be careful with amount, pressure and time on the spinner. Do it in small steps, buffing off the polish with a clean terry cloth rag more often than normal. Better too little than too much polish/shine.

Be patient; take your time.

Renew-It is an effective polish, but it gets there a bit slower than most of the more typical gel type polishes.  It will get you to 2000 (possibly higher) eventually.  If you are looking for a surface rougher than 2000 and want something that is in between most other polishes, Renew-It can get you there.  As an example, if you have reason to want something between 1500, which is kind of a sheen; and 2000, which is getting to be a real shine; judicious use of Renew-It can get you right in there.  Renew-It leaves the ball with a tackier feeling than most polishes, so bear that in mind if that happens to be a result that you don't want.

Are you people talking about Neo Tac Renew-It?
If so, I thought it was a cleaner to use on pearl balls before using Neo Tac Hook-It.?????????

Yes, that's the stuff.  I think it is primarily intended as a cleaner, but it polishes too.  I use Hook-It as my primary cleaner, and Hook-It has no polishing effect.  If I want a little polishing effect, I use a 50-50 mixture of Hook-It and Renew-It.

I reuse the terry washcloths that I use to apply and/or wipe off polishes.  The ones that I've used to wipe off Renew-It residue produce suds when I rinse them out.  Nothing else that I use does that.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
I polished it up so it was shiny but not mirror finished.  I could still see the sanding lines from the 800 grit sandpaper.  I wasn't that aggressive with the pressure, and this spinner isn't that fast.
I think it's an older Jayhawk model.  It can spin either direction (you start it by hand) and it has a cast aluminum ball cup.
