Title: Resurfacing a particle pearl..
Post by: FastTracker33 on May 04, 2008, 01:12:35 PM
Hey everyone, i've heard things like resurfacing particle pearls can sand the particle part right out of them.. Is this true? Or is that really hard to do?

Thanks!

From what I understand particle covers have an additive in the entire coverstock and therefore you will not sand it out as it goes all the way through the cover.

You don't sand out the particles, but some abrasives "sand" the particles down to the same level as the surrounding coverstock making the coverstock less like studded snow tires.

Most particles these days do not have a problem with being sanded.

Some of the older Columbia-based particles had to be sanded with SB nylon pads to avoid smoothing out the softer particles.

resurfacing a particle ball is no different than resurfacing a reactive ball. the coverstock does absorb oil at a faster pace though and you will need to extract the oil sooner.

Thanks for the responses, everyone! They really helped.

The ball i'm going to possibly resurface is a used Roto-Grip Oracle Vision, which has a particle pearl cover. So I think i'll go along and do it if I really have to.

As Jeff said, it was mostly earlier particles, Columbia's in particular.  They used little hollow beads of glass, which was pretty soft compared to sandpaper, Trizact, or Abralon.  Sanding them could smooth out the particles and kill the reaction.

Modern particles don't really suffer that kind of problem, though, and they can be resurfaced without too much worry.  You could always contact RG directly to be sure.

Edit: A teammate has an Oracle Vision that he's adjusted the surface on several times without problem.

If Storm and Roto still use rubber particles there can be an issue. These are better resurfaced with scotch brite and abralon.
