Brunswick's Rough Buff on Particle balls?
« on: February 13, 2006, 11:43:22 PM »
Did anyone try Brunswick's Rough Buff compound on a particle ball yet? Would using a compound be recommendable on a particle at all?

Background is that I plan to resurface my XXcel which has lost lots of back end, and I am not sure how to prep the surface. I want to get away from the 1.000 grit original polish, but I found that a high grit bare surface (2.000 grit sheen) might be too aggressive (reading the lane too early) for what I want the ball to do - so I thought a compound finish should be the go-between.

Rough Buff will be the only stuff avalibale here for this job.

Any experience in this field, anyone? Thanks in advance!

dizzy, I can't answer your question about the rough buff, but my wife has a xxcel & the factory finish was 1000 grit abralon, not polished. I used 3m finesse-it to polish it & it goes longer with a huge backend. If you have rough buff, it should be OK to use it, but I'm not sure what finish you would end up with. The 3m rubbing compound works great also, but that only takes it up to about 1200.

Thank you, sawuser, for the input!

I got the impression that my XXcel was polished OOB? It was very glossy (more than what I'd call sheen), although not a high gloss, with some uneven surface visible. Is this a 1.000 grit Abralon finish? Nevertheless, I liked the reaction very much - long and straight and then a booming strong arc to the pocket. But it lost its pop... de-oiling did not help much, so I think it must be the surface itself.

The alternative to a Rough Buff finish would be a polish with Brunswick stuff, but I do not think it would be the right thing for this ball. Unfortunately, the range of surface products is sparse around here. Well, I'll see what I can get back from the XXcel. It is a great ball and it would be a shame if it was dead after a short time?

I have used the rough buff on the seek & destroy.  It works great, OOB finish and it keeps the same, great reaction.

What difference in reaction did you get on your S&D? Any noticeable chnage in length and breakpoint shape? The S&D is 1.200 grit sheen OOB, if I am right? Rough Buff with a 200 grit base should be a bit shinier?

I largly depends on the amount of polish and how long you keep pressure on the ball.  I would say 200 plus RB would be near 1500 sanded.  But, if you use alot of polish and pressure, it will go longer.

I would try it with a small amount and see what happens, working your way up with more polish if necessary.

1.500 sounds good... I think I will hit the XXcel with 400 grit and apply Rough Buff - and see what happens. I think it should, with the compound finish, still be less aggressive than a pure high grit sanded ball. Thank you for the input, it helps!

Hi!

That's exactly what I did last week with my xxcel...

XXcel with 400 grit and apply Rough Buff

The reaction now is a bit longer than before but still have a good arcing at the end...I'm really satisfied with the result because the xxcel wasnt  turning the corner anymore.

good luck,

Denis

After how many games did your XXcel lose its power?

If I may,
Just remember that RB has some kind of grit in it; so, the more you apply, the longer you spin, the harder you press, the finer and more polished will be the final result.
