Needing more length..help please
« on: December 02, 2007, 02:37:31 PM »
I have a Dyno-Thane Threshold and it was at 800 fine grit OOB. The ball is not a hook monster or anything the way it is layed out but I didn't clean it for a while and it had a lot of oil in it. With all that oil, I could play down the right side of the lane and have a easy light movement and smash the pocket.

Well I cleaned the ball using the hot water bath treatment and it took all of the oil out and now its over hooking. Its got me in the tweener hell and some call it. So, I got the proshop guy to put the Brunswick Ruff buff polish on there and that helped some but after a game it started over reacting.

With that in mind with it being 800 fine grit with polish and its still moving more then I want, would sanding it to a finer grit like 2000 abralon and then hitting it with polish help make the ball play a lot straighter? Or will that not work to get more legnth?

I use it for 9pin tournaments so I just like to stroke this ball with high speeds to get pin action. BTW the speeds are about 18MPH with high revs. Just needing some advice to get this thing to clear the heads and midlane waiting till the backend to make a little arc so I can play the stroker line.

Don't know alot about coverstock prep because I've always used the OOB finish so any help is much appreciated!!!

I used to have one of those.  OOB it hooked way too much or just didn't hook at all because it was burning up too much energy.  I had it taken down to 2000 and it worked really well for me.  I never tried it with any polish on it, but I would first take it to 2000 and see what you think.

Did that straighten out your angle or did you have to play more left cause it helped reserve energy and give it a pop on the backend?

I'm left handed, but it allowed me to play straighter on all the conditions.  For me that ball was never much of a big pop on the back end even out of box.  It just started so early (when there was enough oil) that I couldn't move far enough to my right and still carry from the angle I was coming in at.

At 2000 though I was able to play straighter, and even on the conditions that it was burning up on OOB, it was making the move I was hoping for.

It was a very good ball, but the thumb was messed up so I got rid of it after I won enough money to pay for it.

At 2000 for me it was just a smooth ball.  Never jumped on the back, just a nice continuous arc.

Sounds like what Im needing and then maybe hit it with the polish. I'll give that a shot with just the 2000 then readjust it with polish if I need to. Thanks for the info!

Try 2000 grit first; then try 4000 grit dull/matte.
If they don't work for you, re-sand it to 1000 grit then apply a grit-less (abrasive free) polish like Lanemasters Factory Finish or Brunswick's High Gloss polish. Then try 2000 grit plus one of these polishes; thry try 4000 grit plus one of these polishes.

In this order you should get more and more length. The grit-free polish allows you to control the basic surface underneath the polish so you know exactly where you are. If you use a polish with grit/abrasive in it, like Storm's Xtra Shine (a very good abrasive polish), the polish will change the under-surface and you won't know where you are. That is, the grit level of the surface will be modified by how much polish you use and how long you apply pressure. I think this is important with the problem you are having - that is, to know where you are; so you can make a better educated guess at the next step.
