Correct steps to go from 1500 polished to 2000 abralon
« on: April 23, 2009, 10:04:51 AM »
Being a newbie to surface adjustments, could someone give me a run down on how to take my OgreSS from box finish (1500 polished) to 2000 abralon?

if you want your ogre ss at 2000 abralon no polish there are a number of ways to get "there".

FIRST: there is no correct way

SECOND: there are a few ways that are known to work and achieve different reactions.

one way is to START at 500 abralon then 1000, 2000.(4 sides each grit seems to be the norm) which should yield a good reaction. this is ebonite's way to achieve the OOB reaction on their dull equipment.

another way that was just discussed is to START at 320/360 abralon, lightly use 500 abralon, then skip straight to the last grit you want to ball at (2000). this should achieve the most traction overall due to the lower grit scratches not being smoothed out by many steps of grits.

OR you could just sand with 2000 grit right now. but while this WILL work... the ball will not be as strong as it could be.

I have my ogre ss at 320 then 500 then to 4000. but i havent thrown it yet (will tommorow in league) so if you wanna wait ill let you know how it reacts. (this is storm/rotogrips way)

the message that it seems TO ME that we are seeing from manufacturers is that its important to start at a low grit in order for the ball to have good traction in oil. i never used to do it and my balls did skid more then you would assume from looking at how dull they were.

im sure charlest will help to explain his thoughts as well. but ive learned most of this info from him

icewall,

While the 360 grit Abralon > 500 grit Abralon > 2000 grit Abralon is a NEW way to get "more" on the ball, I am convinced it is not THE only way.

A lot depends on how the ball is sanded, no matter how much some people say this is too detailed and not important.

If a ball is at "1500 grit polished",
1. it is the same as 4000 Abralon and never will be.
2. if you want to get to 2000 grit Abralon, the first hing to do is to remove the polish with the least change to the ball. I'l suggest either a green nylon Scotch-Brite poad (600 grit US or P1200 grit) or a 1000 grit Abralon pad (550 grit US or P1000 grit).  For most people the next logical step is the 2000 grit Abralon pad. For my money and my bowling, this is all that is needed.

The original question was how to get from 1500 grit polished to 2000 grit Abralon. I feel I provided one solution.

If you want earlier roll and more overall hook, the 360 Abralon, followed by 500 grit Abralon followed by 2000 grit Abralon can also work. To my mind, that is not "2000 grit Abralon" but a (500 grit/2000 grit Abralon combo), a different animal entirely.

I agree and thats why I said there is no correct way.

a combo could be:

500/1000/2000
or 360/500/2000

two different surfaces.

IF trying to go straight to 2000 grit I would do what charlest said. green scotchbrite followed by 2000 or 1000 abralon in place or the green scotchbrite. I have done this and know it works.

I could have been more specific then saying just hit it with 2000 rather then removing all the polish first but I thought I covered it well enough. you have been doing it much longer then me anyway so I bow to the master hahaha

I was once the student... sadly not very long ago
