Scotch Brite/Abralon Wear
« on: January 28, 2006, 12:42:54 AM »
If you use a scotch brite &/or an abralon pad for 30 secs per 'side'for 4 sides at a grit, how many usages would you get and still have the pad be true to its original grit?
Assuming:
light pressure
plenty of water during sanding
plenty of rinsing of pad after sanding

Will the number of usages be different, scotch brite vs. abralon?
Will it vary depending on starting grit?
Thanks

Good question, but how would you ever be able to get a true answer without doing some very precise experiments & measurements?

hard to say precisely. as many times as i have done that I have never measured.

yes, to both questions. varies with every factor you can think of.

Any rules of thumb on 'approximate' same grit usage?
Based on the experienced users best observations.
Once and throw the pad out (as far as sanding purposes 'at grit')?
Twice, three times..??
Thanks

As far as AB pads, I have found that getting it as clean as possible, after each use, makes it last a bit longer. SB pads, I tend to throw out after 2-3 usages, depending on the length and pressure used, but that's just me.

scotch-brite: i'd say 3-4 usage depending on grit and pressure used.
rougher ones last slightly longer.

i believe that scotch brite pads last much longer than 3-4 uses. Dont forget that there is 2 sides to this pad...i get at least 10 on each side.

Thanks for the inputs.
Realized that it would be a quessing game at best.
Thru my experience I've been inclined to utilize either type of pads for 3-4 usages tops.

My rule of thumb has been one usage for my 'goto' balls. Then that pads next 2-3 usages are strickly for the rest of my equipment (or for my family and friends..).
At times, I've even doubted the 'correctness' of grit with an original pad after the first 'side' or two. If I could, I would use a fresh pad/or pad side for each 'side' of the ball sanding, but my wife would not appreciate it.

So, just like reading the lanes, when in doubt I thought it is wise to have another's experienced input.
I thank you very much for your time.
