Does polish make a ball less able to combat carrydown or is that simply a matter of grit?

Have never polished a ball before (always just leave them box) bu am looking at possibly polishing a DT High Energy in order to get some extra length. Thing is I'll probably be using it in later games where there is carrydown present and don't want to sacrifice the abiltiy to cut thru.

Would it be better just to up the grit and no polish?

Any and all helpful comments appreciated.

polish is used on a bowling ball for three reasons:

1) to make the ball look better( this is of no use to a serious bowler )

2) to give the ball more length as it goes down the lane

3) it can increase the backend reaction of the ball

if you're facing carrydown or oiler lanes scuff off the polish and try the ball smooth sanded first( wetsanded very fine 1,000 to 4,000 grit with no polish ). if that doesn't work you may have to sand the ball dull( wetsanded 800 grit or coarser ).

Polish requires dry boards in order to grab properly, and in the case of carrydown, the oil has pushed into the drier backends. Meaning fewer dry boards, or dry boards much farther down the lane.

For carrydown, you usually want something duller that will start up earlier, beginning its hook while still in the (now long) oil.

The High Energy comes 1000 grit smooth out of box and is rated as a medium-heavy ball...I would like to get some added length out of it as well as a sharper backend (skid-flip) don't care if it handles terribly heavy oil as I have a box finish Pure Energy that will take care of that.

Just looking to make the ball better to use on lanes that are drier and or burnt out, but still wanting it to be able to handle carrydown in the 3rd game of a set.

If I am getting it outside on a THS do you think carrydown will be much of an issue? Keeping in mind that it is a Soaker coverstock, and the lanes are usually fresh right before my league starts?
