They will act the same when new, however, the SiaAir pads are a different abrasive and will last longer. That's why many of us have gone that direction. Virtually the same cost, but more durable.

Same abrasive... different backing cloth.  It holds onto the abrasive better than the backing cloth that abralon uses.

Lane,

As far as I know, both use Silicon carbide as the abrasive, the same abrasive on wet/dry sandpaper.

My mistake. SiaairVelvet uses aluminum oxide. Odd, because I thought silicon carbide was harder.
This is from Sia's own website.

Guys,

I had also heard that they were aluminum oxide, but wasn't 100% sure, which is why I worded my first response the way I did. Regardless, for whatever reason they seem much more durable than abralon.

Well I guess there are two reasons that they hold up better than abralon...

Actually not.

Now, I wonder why. Silicon carbide is, as far as I know, much harder than aluminum oxide. Maybe they've specially treated it or maybe there's varying hardnesses of aluminum oxide?? I'm not an abrasive specialist/geologist/physicist.

After watching the bruns dvd again what I understand is the Aluminum oxide abrasive actually keeps fracturing or breaking off to keep leaving a "sharpe" tip for durability where the Silicone just "wears down". Also with the amount of abrasive put on the carrier it produces a finer/closer cut/scratch for consistancy. dvd shows first use of each and then comparables at 35 uses of 1 min cycles. the Siaair is much more durable based on looks of "dullness" in comparison
