Snake Oil vs Beans Secret Sauce & scotch brite questions
« on: December 09, 2008, 01:05:24 AM »
Has anybody used both of these products and are there any differences/similarities?  I have used the Secret Sauce with some success after reviving my TNV it provided me with the skid I was looking for but allowed the ball to rev up well.  I do not fare well with the skid snap reactions and hit my ball with a green scotch brite and then the polish to get the arcing motion I was looking for.

On another note which colors of scotch brite pads correspond to grit level.  I believe previously when I posted that the green was 600 grit.

Thanks for any inputs and all the polish and scotch brite pads I use are done by hand.

Floater,

If I remember correctly, the burgandy Scotchbrite pad is 320 grit, the green is 600 grit and the grey is 800 grit.

I have used both and tend to prefer the Snake Oil most of the time.

Regarding scotch brite, "charlest" is the resident expert, but if I remember correctly these are approximate. Much depends on spinner speed, hand pressure, water used, etc. When used by hand you'll add more surface due to slower speeds thus allowing the pad to "cut" more.

burgundy - 320 approx.
green - 600 approx.
gray - 800-1000 approx.
gold - 1200 & up
white - very fine, great for cleaning the ball while not changing the surface.

I use the gold and gray pads the most, by far, around the shop.

Big Jake,

I have found white scotch brite pads at woodworking shops.

The gold ones I found at an auto body supply store locally, but you can probably find both online with an internet search.

I find white ones at the local auto paint store, most times. They run out from time to time but I'm in a small town.

White Pads are 2500
Gold Pads are 1200

This information was obtained from 3M, I decided to call and verify.

Been buying all of my Scuff Pads from a Local Auto Body Supply Store. They'll even order stuff.

Since switching to abralon pads I no longer use scotchbrite pads.I get a more even sanding by hand and the results have been great.I don't have a ball spinner and with the abralon pads I really don't need one.
