Soaking in Hot water
« on: March 01, 2006, 03:15:58 PM »
does soaking in hot water really pulls out the oil in the ball? does the hot water go into the ball instead? is there any other methods of releasing the oil out of the ball?

I have tried putting the ball in the sun for a while n cleaning away the oil.. but  it seems that the method do not release much oil..

If the water is hot enough it is impossible for it to go into the ball...if this was a problem I'm sure the DynoThane president wouldn't be recommending such a cleaning method for all of their balls (especially the Soaker covers).

Have cleaned several balls using this technique and have yet to see any problems.  Much better/safer than oven or dishwasher method to my mind.

Just make sure the finger and thumbholes are sealed...everything else is gravy

You used the sun method and didn't get much ?
One of two things happened...
1. You didn't leave it in the sun long enough/sun didn't really get to it
or
2. You didn't have much oil in the ball.

I use the sun all the time and if there's oil in the ball, it'll come out.

Check out the MoRich website at morichbowling.com and under the "cleaning" section it gives steps for giving the bowling ball a hot water bath.

The bucket method is IMHO the safets thing to extract oil for home use. Just do not use boiling water, and use a mild detergent. Its purpose is to crack and bind the oil when it leaves the ball surface through the warmth and buoyancy of the water, so a splash of some kitchen or all-purpose cleaner will be enough.

Another plus of this method vs. the oven is, that the ball gets heated from all sides the same way and no big tension between coverstock/filler/core is created.

I put my balls every 6 months or so into a bath, and besides some occasional phazing I haven't had any problems - the surface became squeaky again an anything I cleaned so far.
