Solid Coverstock Problem
« on: January 29, 2006, 12:43:22 AM »
This particular ball is the Roto-Grip RSX, but I've had the same issue previously with a Storm Tour Power. Both balls being Solid Reactives.

The problem is the cover seems to pick up every bit of grime it comes in contact with. Not just bits and specs, but blotches 2-4 inches in diameter.
These patches of 'whatever it is' adversely effect the roll and hit of the ball.

If it can't be prevented (polishing only slows it down for a couple of games), does anyone have a suggestion as to a solution that can be used 'guickly' during play to remove it?
I've tried a degreasing solution and a microfiber towel, but it takes far too much time and energy to be used between shots. And this grime actually occurs that frequently.
Several other bowlers in the house are seeing the same problem with their RSXs.

I am not knocking the RSX - shot 789 last Monday first shift. Then tried to clean the ball between shifts, but by early in the second shift the ball was useless as it was again covered with gunk.

FYI- The Storm and this Roto are the only two Solids I've ever had so I can't compare any others.
After thought, this RSX smells of cherry-cinnamon (Storm?).
Does this happen to any other solids??

Any ideas? This is a real issue for me.
Thanks.

i haven't been able to remove these types of marks during league/tournament. afterwards acetone will usually do the job---every other cleaner i've tried hasn't worked.

Sounds like belt marks to me....my house is horrible for this also. The only cleaners to remove these marks well for me is the Lane Masters spray and Tracks Clean and Dull. The Lane Masters(Legends) spray seems to work better and it takes less effort. I'm not sure if it is approved for use during play but if it is that would be the way to go. I personally don't bother with getting them off until after the set.

As this is a polished solid, I went ahead and tried Neo-Tac's Renew-IT by hand and it works quite well and quickly to remove these belt marks.
But it brings up another question:
If my ball is 800 sanded and then polished with Brunswick's High Gloss Polish, how will Neo-Tac's Renew-It, hand applied during competition, alter the ball's surface respectively?
Thanks

Bottle says it's approved.
Thanks!

BUT it does add polish to the ball.
Renew-it is more polish than cleaner!!!
You will be polishing the RS-X more and more with every application.
Tried it a few times; I use it no longer.

If I want a polish, I use a polish.
If I want a cleaner, I use a cleaner.

Try Neo-Tac's Liquid Nitro; it's a good cleaner.

Try Storm's Xtra Shine; it's a good polish.

My wife's new (for her) Titanium Messenger also has this problem, and it is the only ball that does out of the 5 that we use.  I regularly use Clean N Dull by hand after every 3 game set for each ball, but it won't take off the crap that collects on her ball, though it does get the oil off real well.  I finally tried some Isopropyl alcohol, and that finally took it off with a little scrubbing.

Charlest,

I tried the Renew-it on the RSX last night in league and did not like the results. The ball didn't have the same snap and drive off the dry it had with the Brunswick Polishes. Lost a ton of revs..

I'll make a point of getting some of the Liquid Nitro and try it as a cleaner. I'll try anything at this point, it's a downright shame the amount of 'gunk' the ball is picking up on the way back to me.
I should be charging the house a fee for cleaning out the ball returns.

Haven't tried the Storm Xtra Shine Polish,,yet. 3500 Grit Polish might be a bit too fine for my tastes (I have a bad enough habit of throwing through my breakpoint..), but I'm always looking for new reactions. You just never know when you're going to luck into a great combination.

Thanks again!
