Title: Spinner supplies
Post by: slap on March 29, 2007, 12:47:40 AM
I'm taking the plunge and ordering a spinner. I need some help compiling a list of supplies I'll need.

My list so far is...

Stuff I already have...
Clean N Dull
Mega Bite Particle
Rejuvenator

New items
Abralon Disks... 2 each of 360,500,2000,4000
Taxi Contour Abrasion block
Rough Buff
Powerhouse Factory polish
Powerhouse Matte

Does anyone use the foot pedal accessory with their spinner?

Get a spray bottle for keeping the ball wet while sanding.  --  JohnP

Paper towels, used to use rags but a pain. Use paper and throw them away.

That's quite a list Charlest, thanks for posting it. I ordered enough stuff to get me started, I'm sure I'll get additional items as I get more experience with the spinner. It should arrive this weeks so I'm pretty excited.

You won't get any argument from me. You are Baaaaaad!

Drill press? Do I look like an idiot? Wait, don't answer that.
I do enough for friends now for free. I can just see my drilling balls and their telling me the thumb isn't quite right. I'd hand them a piece of 220 grit sandpaper and tell them, "Don't go away mad; just go away."
How the drillers put up with such customers, I'll never understand.

Charlest, great list but what about us people with the thin wallets? Can you cut the list down to the bare minimums that we may need? i.e. do we need both, Scotchbrite and Abralon? How long does the Abralon last and can we get away the the 1/3 hp vs the 1/2 hp motor since I'm not a pro shop and the spinner won't get a ton of use? Do you need to replace the grips only after sanding? Thanks in advance.

One thing that you may have left out of your list is an 18 gallon tub that the spinner sits in.

Sorry I left that out; it does sit in one. It's not obvious,so when I went down to look at it (the PC is on the 1st floor; bowling "pit" is next to the workshop in the basement.), I forgot to "see" that. ALso did not mention the table it sits on.

Dear Hogsbreath,

My list is, of course, not what's required. It's what I have gathered and tried over the 5 years since I started "playing" with this stuff. Obviously the Squeaky CLean is used once eveyr 3 years, if so inclined.

You need only one abrasive-free polish and only one polish with abrasive.

Scotch-Brite and Abralon can be used for different purposes, as well as the wet/dry sandpaper. Abralon iS EXPENSIVE; so I use that less.  Not everyone uses Sand Blaster and Clean and Smooth. Etc.,etc., etc.

I am NOT a pro shop; I only have a 1/3 Hp Vertex (it's all they had when I got mine!) As time went along, I tried or felt the impulse to try different products. Heck, I only got Legends cleaner and polish because I bought (a few free) so many Legends balls. Got enough of both for 2+ years minimum.

I find Abralon pads last 2 - 8 uses/balls, depending on how hard you use them. I cannot possibly understand how Ebonite can get 50+ uses in the factory.

Grip do not have to be replaced after sanding. Often, but not always, I will remove them when I do a TOTAL resurfacing. Mostly, sinc emine are glued at only 2 small spots, after I am totally finished, I'll take an old toothbrush and some alcohol, pull the insert away from the hole's side and clean that area. Grips should be glued just below the level of the hole. If they're above, sanding will hardly hurt them as they mostly flex.

OK I'll edit the list somewhat to eliminate less used and some non-essential products:

Towels:

  • A roll of paper towels

  • Clean soft terry cloth and Micro-fiber cloths

  • Terry cloth facecloths

  • Old undershirts and old toothbrushes for cleaning out finger, weight and thumb holes after sanding or polishing a ball.

  • sponges for backing sandpaper and for general cleaning.

Cleaners:

  • Track's Clean and Dull (the best deep cleaner)

  • Legends cleaner (the best surface cleaner)

  • Acetone

  • Water

Polishes:

  • Brunswick's High Gloss Polish

  • Track's Delayed Reaction

Abrasive Liquids (+ polish):

  • Storm's Xtra Shine (in quart and 4 oz)

  • Track's Clean and Sheen (1000 grit, compound polish)

  • Ebonite's Matte Finish (1200 grit)

  • 3M's Fine Cut Compound polish (1500 grit)

Abrasives:

  • Silicon Carbide wet/dry sandpaper (220 grit - 2000 grit)

  • Abralon 4000 grit (only because there is no other 4000 grit abrasive.)

  • Scotch-Brite nylon pads: maroon (320), green (600), light grey (800), blue (1000), white (1500)

  • Trizact pads (green, blue, orange and white) & Trizact CAB

No offense but -
I'm afraid someone is going to have to drag you, obviously kicking and screaming, into the 20th century (forget about the 21st century!).

Companies are  in business to make a profit on EVERYTHING they sell. Most catalog/internet companies have either a minimum delivery AND HANDLING charge or a minimum ordering amount. The bottom line is they can't have several someones service your order, which usually takes anywhere from 15 - 30 minutes for very simple orders, and make $1.00 on the whole deal.

$8.75 is not for shipping but for shipping AND HANDLING. That handling charge only makes up slightly for the low profit on the one pad you'd like. They'd probably still wind up losing money on your order.

Sorry, but that's the picture as I see it.

When I want one of something like that, I either accept their price, wait till I want several items they're selling or get a bunch of friends together to buy enough to save money on the total order.

Check your local Lowe's, Home Depot or large chain auto supply stores. Many of these are jus beginning to get Abralon pads as a regular item. It depends on your area and the demand.

I tried the Lowes here and they don't carry Abralon.  The guy in the paint department didn't look like I had asked for anything too weird, just said that the only abrasives they have were what was on the aisle there.  They had green Scotchbrite (who doesn't?) and two different dark grey pads that are supposed to replace 0 and 00 steel wool.  I don't know what the grits are supposed to be for those, if those are the "grey pads", or if they're appropriate for bowling balls.

I'm going to try other regular hardware stores and auto shops around here, but Lowes was a bust for more than green Scotchbrite.

I went to my local small town body shop where they do all the paint for the whole area. I asked the guy if he had any used abralon pads? He said he never heard of them. They only used paper. I told him about the pads and how to get them and he said thanks.

I guess us bowlers know more about abralon pads than most body shops......

The shipping is high, if you only order 1-5 at a time. I order several boxes of 25 and it's a deal for me to pay only that, boxes weigh about 6-8 lbs when I get them, so it all works out in the end, for them anyway.
