« on: November 22, 2005, 12:28:29 PM »
I note that a lot of people suggest 3M Rubbing Compound after sanding a ball. There are oddles of different 3M Rubbing Compounds that do different things such as  sand and shine to different finishes and textures, and etc.........My question here is which 3M rubbing Compound?

Years ago, there were only two grits that I remember. There was what was called Rubbing Compound that was very gritty and red in color. I would guess it was about a 400 grit. There was a white, finer grit called Finishing Compound. Maybe 1000 grit or higher.

I use the red stuff. It leaves a matte finish on the balls.

Brickguy, I use two types of the 3M product & they can be found at just about any auto parts store. The rubbing compound comes in a black plastic quart bottle & is tan colored, & it is called Perfect-It 11. I believe it finishes to about 1200 grit & I think it's less than $15 a bottle. The one I like best is Finesse-it 11, it is white in color & polishes up to 2000 grit. It is more expensive at about $30 to $35 a bottle. Both are abrasives & contain no wax or silicone. Great product & if you are just using it for your equipment, they will last a long time.
