rocomended surface prep for over / under conditions
« on: October 23, 2008, 01:23:06 AM »
what is your solution to this ever prevelant problem.
what grit do you go to ?
do you hit it w/ the scotchbrite ?

do you polish it.

im having the hardest time finding a solution to my later games in the set.

i have heard that if you give a ball some surface it wont overreact WHEN it hits the dry.

whats the REAL scoop.

thanks

I like a ball with a little cover not a piece that's too aggressive though. I use 1000 or 2000 on my sonic x for it sometimes

Suggestions I've seen have involved particle balls like the Mammoth with a higher grit and or polish (Rough Buff). Plus a control drilling helps. As for straight reactive balls, I'm not too sure accept maybe going with a lower grit and then a light polish to generate enough traction in oil and not too flippy on dry spots.

seems like it doesnt want to recover when it get to the trouble spot on the lane though @ 2000 abralon

seems like just a board either way your screwed

one board to the left its off to the 7 pin, and one board right you might hit the head pin MIGHT catch the very backside of it

i need a cover prep / ball combo that is imune to this crap condition.

i don't have any particle balls left i got rid of them all

i do however have my very own spinner so i can change any cover i got

IMHO it depends a bit on how severe the wet/dry difference is. Basically, particle is never wrong in this situation, which can be used with a slightly finer surface than a pure reactive.
That said, I'd stay away from a polished surface, unless you have a high load particle piece. 2.000 Abralon or 1.500 wet sanded are IMHO good surface choices, esp. for a solid reactive. Pearl balls are a less common choice, but a sanded pearl ball can also work well, esp. if the conditions are lighter and you need some length.
Flippy drillings are also not best choice...

bowlerdawg,

Damn!!!!  1board left and it's the 7pin and one right and you miss the 1pin???  WTF!!!

I'm all for tough conditions, but that is sick!

now for your situation,  someone else said a controlled drilling,  I'd go with that and something like a 400grit coverstock.

the 2 balls ive used on this situation are the buzzbomb and the EVO

the EVO was @ 4000k abralon, and the BB was @ 2000 + black majic.

both are drilled stacked leverage

i took the EVO down to 1000
and the BB to 1000 plus BEANS sauce

im gonna see what happens tonight.

what kind of controlled drilling ?
??????????????????????????????????

bowlerdawg,

There is no one grit or finish that will conquer ALL carrydown.

1. It depends on what you're using now, and how bad the carrydown is.

2. If you use too rough a surface, you might not be able to use the ball because it won't clear the heads or won't retain enough energy if it does.

3. Usually if you drop one level of grit, it will often work. So, if the ball is at 2000 grit, matte or dull, then if you use the same ball at 1200 or 1500 grit dull/matte, it should still clear the heads and midlane and have enough to hook thru the carrydown. If 4000 grit can't get thru carrydown, 2000 grit can. If 1000 grit can't get thru carrydown, then 600 or 800 grit should. And so on.

If you use pearls:
If 1500 grit polished can't get thru carrydown, then try the same ball with 800 or 1000 grit plus polish.

4. You can always change your angle and use a milder ball and play a breakpoint outside or inside the carrydown area. Example: our carrydown area is usually from 6-9 boards. We can change our breakpoint from 7 board to the 5 board using a less aggressive ball with more backend. or just s less agressive ball.
OR
we can play more of a fallback shot by using the 10 board as the breakpoint, using a ball with a higher and longer pin.
