Suggestions on surface change please
« on: August 02, 2019, 12:34:17 PM »
I have an Ebonite GB-3 Pearl that is giving me a lot of over/under reactions.  From what I've read this is happening to a number of other people.  The box finish is 500/1000 with factory polish.  (Over/under to me is that one ball hooks and the next doesn't)

At first, after throwing it a few times, I broke the factory finish with a worn 2000 n pad.  Ball worked a little better but still a lot of over/under.  Next I had the pro-shop change the surface to 2000 with a medium coat of polish.  At first the ball worked great but then after about 3 or 4 games it was back to the dreaded over/under.

My question is what surface could I try that might make the ball usable?  What about 500/1000/4000 no polish?  Or maybe 500/3000 with medium polish?

I hate to just give up on this ball because I need either a pearl or polished ball that will be similar to a Phenom Pearl that got messed up in the ball return.

Any help would be appreciated as am starting leagues in a couple of weeks and if I can't fix this ball I need to look for something else.

More surface usually reduces over/under (ditch the polish totally).  The danger is it may hook too much too early then which means have to throw it faster, move on lane, change axis rotation, increase loft or use a weaker ball.  GB3 pearl isn't a super strong pearl so I would try a fresh 2000 pad (500/2000 fine) on it and no polish to start.  Unless you are revzilla or are bowling on a desert it should be ok for house shot.

(edit: missed part said need polish.  Why?)

(edit2:  If 2000 is too strong can try with a little less surface but I would avoid polish totally.)

Thanks so much.  I'll try that.

Ive went 500 + polish to help this situation.
Or also used 500 or 1000 and then the matte polish (Powerhouse clean n sheen)
You have some great ideas listed to try out

Just a wild thought, sounds like the lane bed you are bowling on is changing the surface of your ball to a grit that leads to over/under, whether that be 3000 or 4000 or whatever.

I feel you just need to make a big jump and not try to skirt with the exact line between great reaction and over/under.  Start with a 2000 pad, give it a shot. Then 3000 if that is too much.  But try to get something you can reproduce by hand.  Surfaces can change quickly so being able to make surface adjustments before you start will make the ball's performance much more consistent which will give you more confidence in the ball.
