Surface or Polish question
« on: October 29, 2013, 05:44:01 PM »
Just dropped to 14 lbs. from 15 and picked up a used 14 lb. Mission X.  After having the thumb adjusted, the pin is about 5" from my pap and above 2" and between the fingers.  The current surface is 1500 Abralon.  This is going to be stronger than I will need for the alley I bowl in and I was wondering if it would be better to add polish over the 1500 or maybe go up to 2000 and add polish, OR would it be just about the same if I took the surface up to 4000?  I would like to get some good length with a strong finish, if possible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If it's at 1500, then every step you make with the abrasives (2000, 4000, etc.) will add length, PLUS the length you will achieve by adding polish.  Unless you bowl on the Sahara Desert you may get the proverbial over/under reaction.

I prefer to use some grit under my polishes and/or compounds for my taste.  It's very common for me to go 500, then skip directly to the "shine" phase.  I can always add an extra coat of polish if needed later.

I would throw it at 1500 first and go from there as I'm sure you will get an increase in speed due to the lighter weight and therefore you may need more surface to get it to turn the way you are accustomed to with a 15.

Exactly why guess what it may do before actually throwing...changing surface in increments is not difficult...500 to 1000 to 1500 to 2000 etc...
