Too much
« on: February 06, 2004, 02:43:43 PM »
Am I cleaning too much? Every time I get home from bowling I do this: get oil off with strong solvent(stuff witch someone on a different site recommended. Who is a chemist so I know it is ok)then Storm reacta clean then Track magic shine polish. I do this every time I use them and don't know if I am damaging the balls by polishing them too much and filling pours and so on. If anyone has good advice on a good ball cleaning regime and good cleaning/polishing products.I have also made a ball spinner(witch vibrates like hell)so anything that works with that would be good too.

Many thanks ,Alex

Sounds like a bit of overkill.  What "strong solvent" are you using?  While it's a good idea to clean your balls after each session, polishing each time could eventually clog the pores if you use too much.

I would clean after each set: Simple Green or Citrus Drgreaser or Reacta Clean or Liquid Nitro or...

Wood or worn lanes: Repolish every 9-12 games.

Synthetic or well maintained lanes: Repolish every 15-25 games.

I wipe my ball down with a towel on each throw.

Otherwise I almost never clean unless they stop hooking like new.

Doesn't usually happen but then I resurface or if brunswick particles I trizact.

My stuff works forever!

Strider,It's the solvent for evostick(a strong contact adesive). It's made up of hexane and toulene this guy told me it is ok and he knows his stuff!http://www.bowlersparadise.com/forum/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=1e82d9d13943fbb87b74178801db319e;act=ST;f=3;t=4

I work for one of the top 5 chemical plants in the world and I would stop using that stuff IMMEDIATELY!

Methylene Chloride (dichloromethane) can be considered a carcinogen (causes cancer) and a mutagen.  Toluene will soften plastics much easier than acetone, which is illegal.  You are either going to take some serious health risks or slowly melt your ball using anything he suggested.  Please find something else to clean your equipment with.  Your long term health is worth more than a clean bowling ball.

Strider,The Methylene Chloride (dichloromethane) dose sound a bit over the top. As for the toulene based cleaner I only dab a bit on a cloth then wipe off belt marks and pin marks and maybe sometimes round my track to remove old oil. We are not talking about getting a bucket filling it with the stuff dropping in my ball in an enclosed space while smoking a cigarette here. Anyway I think as with most things in life moderation and commonsense are the key , a dab here and there will have no adverse affects on the ball the stuff evaporates strait away with out leaving a trace , so no chance of there being any residual affects of the ball getting softer and softer. I also use the stuff every day at work so it's unavoidable.

PS. Strider many thanks for the concerns about my health but I think I'll be ok

I am a hazardous materials tech. and Strider is correct. This is a health warning from the emergency response handbook. i AM ONLY GONNA NOTE A FEW.
"TOLUENE"
POTENTIAL HARZARDS
FIRE OR EXPLOSION
HIGHLY FLAMABLE: WILL BE EASILY IGNITIED BY HEAT,SPARKS OR FLAMES.
VAPORS MAY FORM EXPLOSIVE MIXTURE WITH AIR.
VAPORS MAY TRAVEL TO SOURCE OF IGNITION AND FLASHBACK.

HEALTH
MAY CAUSE TOXIC EFFECTS IF INHALED OR ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN.
VAPORS MAY CAUSE DIZZINESS OR SUFFOCATION.
INHALATION OR CONTACT WITH MATERIAL MAY IRRITATE OR BURN SKIN AND EYES.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHES
WEAR POSITIVE PRESSURE SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS (SCBA)
STRUCTURAL FIREFIGHTERS PROTECTIVE CLOTHING WILL ONLY PROVIDE LIMITED PROTECTION.

Its your choice if you want to continue to use this chemical but just rememeber
you have been forwarned. Just B/C someone tells you it's OK to use it doesn't mean that it is OK. If you ever want to use a chemical to clean a bowling ball just use a Bowling ball cleaner. Unless you want tobe a TOXIC EXPERIMENT.

getuaload,As I state in my last post I use toulene at work and have been using it for more or less 20 years without any ill affects or explosions. I use it at work much the same as on my bowls (just a little at a time) and when I say it's ok I mean on my bowls I already know the stuff is harmless if used properly. So I don't think I'll be a TOXIC EXPERIMENT just yet!

Ubik, why would you ask a question, only to tell the qualified responders that you don't need anyone to answer your question??? I don't quite get it.

The question was about general cleaning not about specific solvents

Personally, I clean all my stuff before every time I compete.  I use a 50-50 mix of Simple Green and rubbing alcohol.

ubik,

just clean your ball with reacta-clean or liquid nitro before you put your ball in your bag every night after bowling.  the shouldnt let the oil soak into the ball, nor clog the pours.

I use the storm cleaners(mega bite & reacta-clean) on my equipment after i finish bowling.  I only apply polish when necessary.

If you have any futher questions, dont hesitate to msg me...

Thanks

Thanks for the replies, this is going to sound funny but can someone tell me what sort of detergents orange409 and simple green are. I'm over her in the UK and we don't have them here.
