Abralon Grits/Colors
« on: September 02, 2005, 10:57:03 AM »
What color pads are what grit?  Forgive me if it's been answered before, but I can't find it.  Found plenty of posts here and lots of places that sell it, but not one that tells you how the colors and grits correlate.  I have the Scotch Brite list saved on my hard drive, but need help with the Abralon.

Strider,

My experience is the same as Sr's. I only have 3 pads: 1000, 2000, 4000.
They look the same and have the grit number on the back. I don't know if other grits or other manufacturers are the same. Mine were made by Mirka and sold by Tool Peddler:

(FYI They discount those prices when purchasing.)

One of the members here (gilaz33) has an Ebay auction that looks like a good way to try some of the pads.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Ball-Scuff-Pad-Assortment-12-Pack-8-95-Free-Shipping_W0QQitemZ7180084723QQcategoryZ111255QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It shows green (fine), maroon (very fine), and gray (ultra fine), but the small picture doesn't give the actual grits.  Would that be the 1000, 2000, and 4000 grit pads?  I'm mostly interested in the 2000 and 4000 grits because higher grits are very hard to find in sandpaper and Scotch Brite.

Hmmmm, maybe I misread his auction.  On his post here it mentioned abralon, but the scuff pad auction I linked only says scuff pad assortment.  The maroon (very fine) is made by Mirka, so it could be abralon.  The green might just be a 600 grit Scotch Brite pad.  The gray (ultra fine) says Mirlon and seems to be like 000 steel wool.  I guess the auction is a mix and match assortment.  Not a bad deal, but not what I'm looking for.  Thanks guys.

Strider,

You have to look at all his auctions or just email him on ebay or message him here. I did see one auction that had solely abralon pads like I bought: 1000, 2000 and 4000 grit for 12.95 delivered.

I did message him and was told:

The green is like a polishing pad, maroon is about 400-500 and the gray is about 600, as these are scuff pads.

I've never seen a green pad that was fine enough to be a polishing pad, and by his own description (maroon = very fine, gray = ultra fine), I certainly didn't think they would be in the 400-600 range.  That didn't make sense, so I started this post.
