Question
« on: March 05, 2005, 08:52:30 PM »
This may seem like a stupid question, but here goes...
If the coverstock/pre is suppose to be 60-70% (as most believe) of a balls reaction, has anyone played with a , say WD/Tornado Warning type ball to sand down cover and not polish it back to factory specs ? I have an old WD and was thinking of taking it down to 600..polish it just a hair to see what reaction it would have. Almost like 'making' a particle without the particles ? Sound crazy ? I just need to play around with that idea and see what will happen. Anyone done anything like this before ? Suggestions ? Made mistakes and care to share ?

I know it may seem silly to many, but I picked the ball up at a yard sale,,,great condition just something to 'play with' in cover prep, maybe try a different angle on the thumb or fingers...just try something on a ball that didn't cost me but $3.50.

azguy -- One of my junior bowler customers wanted a ball that would hook but couldn't afford a reactive ball.  I drilled him a White Dot and sanded the cover to 400 grit.  It hooked less than reactive resin, but a lot more than polished plastic.  --  JohnP

I truly have small or light hand..if you know what i mean...i was just wondering what can be done ? what is the 'max' that one could do to a ball and have what reaction from it. I don't think most really know the limits of any given ball, under what cover changes, if that makes sense to anyone...I have a couple to 'play' with and was wondering who had done what to balls and what was the outcome. This is more an experiment than a real 'tune up' for any ball. Knowing the limits will save time and effort down the road, plus I'm not sure we all really know the limits of any given ball, just thinking out loud.
