Using Abralon Pads by Hand?
« on: December 23, 2008, 05:51:43 PM »
Just curious if any of you guys use Abralon pads by hand?

I obviously don't have a ball spinner, but would like to resurface my equipment at home.

Is this a horrible idea?

I do it all the time, (not really for resurfacing though) before/during tournaments or league or whatever.

It's veeeeery common to see during regionals or tour events.

Buy a spinner...costs less than one high end ball at a pro shop and every ball you already own will last longer and be more versatile.

I wouldn't recommend resurfacing a ball without one.

I looked on Buddies and saw they have a lot of them for sale.

I know nothing about these.  What would I need?

abralon pads
polish
cleaners (I usually clean by hand)
Spray bottle (water)
Foot Switch(optional)

You may be able to get a kit from your proshop with 1k,2k,4k pads, towel, polish, and cleaner for around 50 bucks, if not they sell the same kit on bowling.com

Yeah, definitely get a spinner.  My father and I have one and I wonder how we managed before we got one.  All my stuff stays in pristine condition and we can change the surface on balls before we head to league....nice to be able to have that option.  They really aren't all that expensive and will pay dividends in the long run.

Just need the spinner, several cleaners and polishes, some abralon pads and some rags and you're all set.

I use my pads by hand and haven't had any problems with it but a spinner is better because you can sand the ball more even overall and you don't have to worry about you hands getting tired. In about 2 months I'm going to invest on a spinner since I have tournaments coming up.

A spinner is well worth the money, in the long run. Pads are not cheap but here's a guy's addy that sells 20 for about $60 shipped, you mix/match the grits you want. Not a bad deal if you can't/won't buy each pad in bulk.

I have bought some stuff from Supergrit.com.  Huge selection of just about any kind of abrasive.  I bought some crazy stuff to test on bowling balls, you never know, you might find something!!  Good prices, good service, fast shipping.

BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SPENT INVOLVING BOWLING. Get one and you will see what we all mean.

Surface changes, resurfacing, maintenance, polishing. You name it and YOU can do it. Nuff said

Okay guys, I get it, a spinner rocks, however, which spinner do I want?

Looking on buddies they have 1/3 hp, 1/2 hp, a 1/3 hp with a foot pedal, there is just so much to choose from, and I have no idea where on earth to begin!

I've had the 1/3 Vertex for 6 or 7 years now. Never saw the need for more. Still going strong.

I personally bought a 1/2 vertex, it's pushing 6 years without any problems, I've only had to take the bottom cover off any oil the bearings when they became squeaky.

Here spider....I'll make your search a little harder or easier. lol. We sell the 1/2HP in three packages on our website, so if you like our products and want a foot pedal it's a stellar deal.
