I want to start doing my own coverstock on my bowling balls. During league if i need to rough up the surface. Can I do it by hand?

You're not allowed to adjust the surface "during" league...once play begins.  You can adjust the surface during practice, and you can do it by hand.  I find I get the best results with Scotchbright when "roughing up" the coverstock by hand.  Some use Abralon, but I don't like the result when using by hand.

+1 on the scotchbrite pads when doing it by hand.

What about the rule that states that you can return a ball to its original condition?

In a sanctioned USBC league, you CANNOT use any abrasive on ANY ball once competition has begun, as far as I know. no exceptions.

Charlest is right.  Once play starts any ball, including the ones still in the bag, cannot be altered.  They can be cleaned by an "approved during competition" only cleaner.  USBC has a list.  Check it out.  If you see during practice that you may want the ball your throwing altered or one that you may use later altered, then that's the time to do it.  In our house most of the open bowling is on lanes 1-12 or so.  They are usually driest come league time or don't take as long to dry out.  Our league posts lane assignments on the web 2 weeks ahead of time so I have somewhat of an idea before hand what to bring as far as coverstock types.

OOOppps!!!, LOL  I was looking at some threads for knocking off polish when I came to this one.  Didn't realize it was so old. Never mind.
