Often it is not a case of whether to use a matte finish or polish. According to one chart, a 400 grit + polish will go longer than a 4000 grit matte finish. 400 grit under polish is a very low grit level, very rough, and not often used. I think a lot depends on the polish and its application.
So sometimes, it's how much length do you need? and, on what ball?
Some people find 4000 grit matte as an acceptable altenrative to many manufacturers' stock "1500 grit + Polish". The 4000 grit matte finish will hook slightly earlier, have less backend andless overall hook. It handles only slightly more oil. So it is often a good alternative for people who are rev dominant or have a lot of tilt which results in too much backend and too much skid.
