How to take care of a ball
« on: June 19, 2005, 11:33:23 AM »
Hi guys, I'm wondering what i should do to take care of my ball so that it doesn't "die". Ive read about balls dying or burning out, and im not sure what that means, i just dont want it to happen to my ball
Also, I have a vertigo that i bought off a proshop guy used for 85 bucks, he redrilled it for me and i've been throwing it pretty good.  He had it polished up as well. Should i repolish it every now and then?

if you're not going to take care of the coverstock of the ball you may as well wetsand it to 600 grit and leave it----that's about what it will be eventually after all the wear and tear. polished balls need more attention than dull balls do. how often do you throw them ? this will determine a lot.

Keep any ball clean. Wipe it down, to keep as much oil off it as possible, and clean it with some cleaner .

I clean mine and my wife's balls after every practice/league night. There are many cleaners on the market and a few folks, like me, have 'created' their own cleaners. Storm has a good cleaner, as does Track. A lot of us use Simple Green and water mixture. As you can tell and I'm sure there will be many posts, you don't have to buy a 'company cleaner' ....just keep it clean.

If you notice that it doesn't hook like it used to, you might need to have it 'deoiled', your pro shop can do this, Columbia has a CPR that does that, again, many different ways.

Best thing.....Keep It Clean>>>>it will or should, last you a long time.

Hope this helped.

Well, some balls lose their polish rather quickly, ie my Ultimate. After 30 games the polish on the track is pretty much gone. If you like the reaction of the ball polished, then keep it polished by all means.

Burning out has nothing to do with not cleaning the ball. Burning out means the ball your using is too strong for the amount of oil your using it on. The effects: reduced backend and hit. In other words, the ball is using its energy too early because there is not enough oil to carry it down the lane. Polishing will help this problem if you have it or switching to a weaker ball.

As for cleaning, I personally use a mixture of Simple Green mixed with water. 50/50. It's good for cleaning off a good amount of dirt and grime. But for the belt marks or hard stuff, I use Neo-Tac's Hook-It which takes it off in no time. But the stuff can become pretty pricey as it costs like 13 bucks for like 8 oz. Wiping the ball in between shots can also help oil from being soaked in. Hope that answers your question.

Hi,

Clean and Dull is an excellent product from Track that can be used to keep your ball in good condition. It does not actually dull the ball, but instead, keeps it in its current state.  It's the only product that I've ever sold in my proshop that makes a ball feel "tacky", as if it were a new ball.

I can't advise you on how often to polish your ball because it depends on: the condition of the lanes; the amount of oil; your rev rate; and the amount of flare that the ball has; low flaring balls tend to show a track far sooner than high flaring ones.  What I can tell you is that Black Magic is one of the finest polishes on the market.  Use it sparingly because it will highly polish your ball.

Since you've not previously used Black Magic, have the proshop polish your ball.  If you like the product, then spend the money purchasing it.  Like with any polish, it will work best if used with a ball spinner.  Not having that, I would suggest using a damp cloth; rub in a circular motion and use sparingly.  Between polishings, use Clean and Dull to maintain the current surface.
