5+" Pin to PAP distances
« on: March 02, 2004, 12:42:20 AM »
I am considering drilling up a ball with a 5-3/4" pin to pap distance @ 90*.

What reaction should I expect?

What are the pros and cons of pushing the pin past 5" from the PAP?   I have talked to multiple people only to get mixed reactions.

I am having trouble getting the ball down the lane on light oil regardless of cover prep.   Then, if I do, the ball will not make the corner.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am either going to put it in a Vicious Pearl Reactive or a Sharp Blade.

Does pushing the pin farther from the pap give added length?  Will I sacrifice "hit"?

what difference does it make  kicking the c.g out an inch or so when the pin is above the bridge, does this make for a slightly earlier/ bigger backend than the c.g in the palm?

I have a shock trauma i'm thinking about drilling like this and sanding to 1000-1200grit.

When you say kicking out, do you mean cg closer or farther from pap?? If you swing it towards the pap would have a arcing backend.

I see you have a high rev rate.  Majority of my layouts are with the pin 5+" because of my high rev rate and lower volume of oil I see.  I have several balls with 6" pins.  Above the fingers and you will get more kick downlane. I would note that it's been my experience that unless you need maximum length when you start going longer than 5", it's best to kick the CG out towards the PAP in order to get some read.  Otherwise they tend to get over/under because the longer pin reduces flare (lowers read) but then when it encounters friction, it hooks too much.  A lot of high rev tour players go with 6" pins to increase length.  Check out

Anthony- thanks for your response.   I currently have one ball laid out in this fashion.   It is a Blade pearl.   It has the pin in the middle finger with the CG on the center of grip.   This ball is by far the lengthiest ball I have but it doesn't carry the corners all that well.    And, if I try to "go around" the lane, on THS, then I run into roll out.

I don't think that is because of the pin location, I think it is because of the strength of my cover stocks.

I am going to try a 6" pin.   I haven't tried anything past 5", and I typically bowl on drier THS.   One house is old guardian with light oil, and I am really struggling there.    The majority of my equipment is too strong for this condition, and burns up.

I will try a longer pin.

thanks.

You probably need to go with coverstocks/cores that are cleaner to get the carry.  The Ebonite/Hammer covers weren't the cleanest or longest when I used to throw them.  They tended to fizzle when the heads or mids went even with long pins because of how strong the cores and covers were.  If you decide to stick with Hammer, you may want to sand them down to a finer grit and then polish.  I seem to remember their standard surface was 800 grit and then polish.
