Grip layout Thumb inline with Middle Finger?
« on: November 11, 2006, 02:50:34 AM »
When laying out a grip the classic way the thumb hole is on the
center line right? But wasn't there also a layout that had the
thumb inline with the middle finger? I think I remember seeing
it in BTM long ago.

Take a look at this layout on my black widow.

Tell me what you think. I want to ask my balldriller about it.
I always assumed he layed it out the "classic" way.
But now I'm not sure.

Yeah, you can layout the ball in that "Y" way. Ive had instructions on how you do that, but i think ive lost them.

Frankie May (designs balls for Visionary) has been drilling balls this way for years; he calls it the Frankie May Action Grip.

It seems that all this would do is just lengthen the ring finger

I call it an illusion.  The center line (or grip line) is just that.. a line that passes through the center of the bridge between the fingers and through the center of the thumb.  By shifting the thumb hole to the left of the grip line, it shortens the middle finger span and it increas the ring finger span (just as shifting the thumb to the right of the grip line would increase the middle finger span and shorten the ring finger span).

Edit:  I would guess that doing so would change the layout slightly as well.  Since the true grip line is now sort of rotated clock-wise from the one drawn on the ball, your PAP would also be rotated clock-wise.. meaning that the pin is probably slightly longer than 5" and the layout is slightly less than 60 degrees...

Just as a update my PAP in the pic is in the correct position. the pin
placement 5" and Degree angle 60 take into account where the center line
is.In the "Frankie May Action Grip"

My PAP in the pic is 5 1/4" from the centerline on the midline.

In the "classic" grip my PAP is about 5 3/4" X 5/8"up, which comes to
the same place.

This all came up because I was "reverse engineering" my layouts with the
pro-sect. I knew my ring finger was dropped 2/16"
but when I layed out the grip the classic way the 2/16" wasnt
there. I was stumped, then I thought about when I got the widow drilled
. My driller had me hold the ball and he drew a line between my middle
and ring finger has I held the ball.

I realize now that was where the centerline of the F.M.A. Grip was. I
used that and my 2/16" dropped ring finger showed up.

Now using the F.M.A. Grip centerline changes how I can locate my PAP.
(which is is 5 1/4" from the F.M.A. Grip centerline on the midline.)

I guess I just forgot thats how he was doing it. I remember back when
we dropped my ring finger 2/16" because it was stretched out to much.
(because we used the FMA grip. slapping head!!)
