changing thumbhole pitch
« on: August 05, 2003, 08:44:31 AM »
right handed and tonight went from 1/16 left and 1/16 reverse to 3/8 and 3/8 the other direction to quit squeezing the ball so much. only tried this because i was able to throw another ball with these pitches but thumb was alittle big.
after my thumbhole was reslugged and redrilled threw the ball great, cleared thumbhole ok but felt a new pressure at base of thumb. tryed to bevel, i like alot of bevel anyway but didnt help much. didnt have to squeeze anymore but felt a new pain. does anyone think shortening span would help this pressure or does anyone have any suggestions.

Strikealot,

Mike is a good guy and knows what he's talking about.

May I offer something else?
Usually people go to less reverse to better hold onto the ball. The physics and mechanics of the hand and its musculature govern this. That makes me wonder of your span was correct for the 1/16" pitches, versus the new 3/8" pitches. 1/16" piches WITH THE PROPER SPAN, should, theoretically, be much easier to hold onto than a 3/8" pitches. I recently went from 3/8" reverse, 1/4" left to 1/8" rev, 1/4" left and grip span was reduced by 3/32". Wish I had gone to 0" reverse.

I wonder if your span with the 1/16" pitch might have been too short?
Also, you might need 1/16" reverse with 3/8" left; a lot depends on your hand and how its muscles, tendons and ligaments are naturally arranged. Please see some previous posts from LuckyLefty and the coke bottle test.

my span prob is too short, we went to a real relaxed span a few years ago, i use to have major thumb probs with the inside, right side of my thumb tearing up everytime i had to bowl many games in tourny or practice. short span seemd to help is why ive stuck with it.
