Sore finger tips
« on: March 08, 2004, 08:22:04 PM »
I have begun having minor problems with Callouses <Sp> on my fingers.  Right on the tips on the side opposite the nail.  Some have told me this is a span issue, others say my inserts are to tight.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

It could be either a span issue or a pitch issue.  I would have your local pro-shop look at both and figure it out.  But as people get older their flexibility will change in their finger joints.  So it actually could be either of the things that I mentioned or a combination of the two.

Thanks for the input.  I will try to see him today.  I hope it is just an insert issue.

Thanks again!

Hope it works out for you!

FYI...it could be an insert thing, but they would have to be pretty damn tight for you to have this kind of an issue.

Gonna try a new driller.. I think.  I think it might be a pitch issue, but my driller just sorts dismisses it... maybe I am just very mistaken.

Did get larger grips, but I have a lot of pressure on the nail side of my finger when they are in the ball... I'll figure it out though!!!

Thanks again for input!

If you are have pressure against your nail of your finger...then it is either you pitch or the span.  Checking your span is easy...just put your thumb in the ball and place your fingers over your finger holes.  Look at where thre crease of your finger tip lays over the holes.  It should be atleast past the halfway point of the whole.

Another test is to place your fingers in the ball as put your thumb into the thumb hole very slowly.  While doing this watch your fingers in the whole.  If they lift out slightly your span is probably a tad long.

Hard to say for sure...but it sounds like you have an issue that needs to be addressed if it bothering you that much.  Good luck!

Bigjfk -- some skin thickening on the pad side of the finger tips is normal -- this IS the part of the finger you lift and rotate the ball with.  If it is hurting or peeling, check your finger flexibility.  How much will the last finger joint bend without forcing it?  A flexible joint will easily bend about 90 degrees.  If yours bends less than that (compare it with fingers on your non-gripping hand, unless you have arthritis that affects them), you need some amount of reverse pitch in the finger holes to relieve the tension.  If the joint will bend about 45 degrees, I recommend 1/2 inch of reverse pitch, if about 30 degrees, 3/4 inch.  You can use those numbers to estimate what your pitch should be.  Don't worry about losing lift or rotation with the reverse pitch, if you need it because of flexibility it won't affect your release except to make it pain free.  --  JohnP

I have callouses on my finger pads and I KNOW now that my span and pitches match my hand,....I don't think this is "abnormal"....

I found an old junk ball..  I am drilling it up to experiment with some pitch in the fingers, and possibly a 1/8 inch shorter span.  Hopefully after some trial and error I will know what I like best.

In addition, I have had a hard time finding a driller that "cares" for sometime now, but I think I found one last night... Of course it tears me up though, cause I really like my old driller-- just not the results I am getting...

Thanks guys!

kingpin--

I have spent the last two weeks getting my thumb perfect.  I finally have achieved this-- or at least as close as I can.  I think I am gonna find I need a little forward pitch in my fingers, hopefully it will be very minute.  I think y span is right on, after using the techniques explained to check it.  Anyway, I'll let you know how it turns out, hopefully it will be an easy fix, as I am looking to drill an arsenal in the near future.  I just want it right!

Thanks again!
