I'm Looking For a Very Good/Knowledgable Ball Driller In Metro Detroit Area

Can anyone please recommend a good proshop/ball driller in the Detroit area?  I am so sick of going to proshops were I talk to the guy behind the counter, and after 5 mins. I realize (thanks to this website) that I know more about drilling lay-outs then he does.  And don't let me pull out a drill sheet and say "dill it like this".  They look at the sheet like it's hieroglyphics or something and Then he argues with me about how that layout I am asking for is not a good layout, without ever seeing me bowl.

  All I want is someone who is knowledgable about layouts AND bowling balls.  I wish I knew how to drill balls myself.  Is there a course or book or video that can teach you the proper way to measure and drill bowling balls?

Message Jeffrevs and ask about KOTM. I think that KOTM is in the Detroit area and is one of if not the best drillers in that area. He does all of Jeffrevs drilling and Jeff is very pleased with the knowledge, layouts and drilling accuracy of KOTM. I have also talked to KOTM a number of times for help/advice and he has always been accurate.

Yeah, he's in livonia. I've had stuff drilled by a lot of guys in the area, and none of them really stood out in my mind over any other. I haven't changed pitches in about 2 years, so that might make a difference in my impression, because i've found something thats comfortable.

Many proshops will seem like they don't know much about layouts and drilling, but for the most part, they know WAYYYY more than any of us here. They know what kind of drilling will work for what kind of reaction for what type of bowler you are. most of the time, the problem is that they are used to guys coming in saying "I want a ball drilled like this to do this" when it is completely off, so when someone comes in and starts talking, they automatically assume that this customer is going to be another pain in the as$.

Jumbo's pro shop in eastpoint lanes isn't too bad. Prices are reasonable, and jumbo knows his stuff. Discount pro shop isn't bad either, but there prices can be extremely steep. Same with the one in pampa, although the guy there is very knowledgable. The guy over at sterling lanes is a pretty nice guy, little high price wise, but not too bad.

I get my stuff drilled by the guy at sunnybrook now, Bill Tucker, mostly just because he's one guy i've found that is willing to talk for a while about the reaction your looking for and how to achieve that reaction. He has a few old school ideas about statics and weightholes still (he doesn't use weightholes to modify reaction, only to mess with the statics), but besides that, he knows his stuff pretty well.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about kurt pilon also, haven't had anything drilled there, but I know a lot of people that get stuff there. S and b pro shop has had some good things said about it too. kevin woj's proshop is where my dad used to get all his stuff drilled at, really nice guy there too, knows his stuff.

My father bowled with both jumbo and kevin woj, both were some of the highest average bowlers in one of the best leagues in the area at the time (don't know if its still big anymore) the friday night league at shorecrest. So, both really know the physics of bowling if that helps make the decision.

Michiganbowling.com has some good information about a lot of stuff too if you've never been there. You should bowl in some of the sport tournaments, maybe over the summer, as they are always short trying to find bowlers.

KOTM helped me out also and that was with e-amil and pics can't imagine how good he can do when he can actually see a hand in person.

You are so correct Stanski.  I wouldn't dream to think that I know more about drilling then someone who does it for a living.  It just seems to me that when I go to a proshop for the first time and I try to talk bowling balls and layouts with them they always have this, "dont tell me how to do my job" additude.

I have only been bowling off and on for 10yrs, but 90% of the bowling balls I have owned have been drilled incorrectly.  No matter where I go or what ball I buy they always want to slap a Label Leverage layout on my ball. which in back in the Urethane days this was O.K., but not anymore.

I had problems with Mark at Bowler's Aid a couple of years ago.  No matter how much I tried to explain, he would not believe me that the Storm Shock Trauma is a solid reactive and not a particle reactive.  If you can remember this ball was made with a Mica additive in the coverstock which made it harder allowing it to skid longer in oil, but it is not a particle ball.  After watching me bowl, I let him drill it the way he thought would give me the reaction I wanted.  Pin above the ring finger, cg in the palm, and MB to the left of the thumb on the track.  This layout did not work for me it was too smooth thru the backend and it didnt make that sharp turn at the break point like I wanted.  When I took my ball back to him the next week and told him I wanted him to redrill it with the MB in the strong position.  He seem offended by my request.  Three days and $50 later I finally got the layout I should have gotten in the first place.  That was the first and last asymmetric ball I ever bought.  Not because I dont like my ST but because I dont know a driller that I can trust to layout and drill it correctly.

I had Jon at Plum Hollow drill my UI, which I just had to pay $35 to have redrilled because he set me up with a label leverage layout.  I feel he should have known is way too aggressive for the UI which is designed to hook in heavy oil already, unless you play in a swamp.  By the middle of the second game of league I would be struggling just to keep it on the lane or lofting it half way down just to keep it from burning out.

I've had other bad experinces at other proshops which I dont want to mention.
I have never had anything drilled at Taylor Lanes, I may try there.

Yep, I know how annoying that can be. Every driller thinks that you need nothing more than a label drilling to get by. All of the drillers i cited give you many more options than that, and will definately lay something out that works well. I know jumbo even talked me into putting a pin over bridge, mb on val layout for a freak. One of the best rolling balls I have ever had.

If you're looking for lessons, I've practiced next to this guy giving lessons, and he really does a nice job. He has all types of video and equipment that measures a whole crapload of stuff, and really sounds like an educated guy. Pampa does put out a cake shot though...
