I am going to be drilling a ball for my father this week. He wants a 15lb Storm HIT drilled pretty tame.

With that in mind I want to mention his game---he has low ball speed (14.0), I consider him a 3/4 roll, he tracks about 2 inches from the finger and thumb holes. He usually plays pretty deep, even in the heavy oil he is normally sending the ball over 17 out to about 8 board.

He has a Black Urethane Messenger and it hooks too much for him on flying backends. This HIT is what he wants to use when the backends are flying.

The layout I want to use is 5x6.5. I think the touch of negative will help him get the reaction he is looking for. This will be the first ball that I drill for him. On top of the layout, when I did an analysis on his hand, I found that he is stretched probably 1/4 in too far.

Would the 5x6.5 be a good layout for the lane conditions I spoke of----OR should maybe I go with the pin closer to the PAP---something like 1x5?

The last time I had a Big Hit Solid, I drilled it 5 1/2 x 4 1/2, with the pin above the bridge. This was REALLY TAME, but if you see my profile, maybe that might explain it. Just offering that layout as another to consider; it was extremly awesome when the lanes were screaming for me.

Putting the CG negative would have a "fade" on the roll of the ball. The weight would just make it do nothing, but it all really depends on what his game is. I don't know his game and i'm not master of drilling, but I started to put my pins left and it has controllable backend motion compared to having pins to the right.

Excal,

The Hit is a 3 piece true pancake core; the Big Hit is a dynamic core. I assume you do mean the Hit.

Putting negative side weight in a Hit will have a much more significant effect, causing early revs and early roll than it will in a dynamic core ball. In fact, manipulating the resulting top weight is the only thing that affect the drilling. I would not think of it as 5x6.5 at all.

I put only about 1/2 oz negative side weight in an old NIB Ebo Gyro last year and I was shocked at how early that ball, a pearl resin, tried to go into a roll. I'll never do that again. Don't forget that these balls stabilize very quickly in any case.

With a true 3 piece ball like the Hit, it really doesn't matter where you put the pin. In fact, there really is no pin. The only thing that matters is the static weights. I would give him a little positive side weight and a little finger weight. If it's too strong you can take the side weight out with an extra hole. If it's too long you can scuff the surface a little.

Does he have that much hand, that little speed or are the lanes THAT dry?

I tried that once on a urethane, unless there's some head oil & very clean backends or his speed is high enough to get some length, even with a pearl resin, it means IMMEDIATE roll and little hook. If he meets those quals, then what the heck? Give it a try. It can always be re-drilled.

I'd rather, if he meets at least some of these qualification, either drill it with say, 1/2 negative side weight, for earlier roll, but retaining some of the positive qualities of resin,

OR

get him a pearl urethane (all right now are the same 3 piece pancake cores) and
have it drilled with positive side and finger weight. (Ebay has older Hammer with 2 piece cores, but these can get expensive. Lane#1 is supposedly coming out with a 2 piece pearl urethane.)

It is not that he has that much hand, it is more his lack of speed. Where we bowl the backends are very fresh, and carrydown is usually not a factor.

Here is the condition (for it is medium oil).
38ft buffed to 43ft. 15-15 boards are 35 units, 14-10 22 units, 9-7 16 units.......

When he squares up his plastic target zone works. When they are a little drier he can play with that ball on his normal line. I want the HIT to play a few boards stronger maybe, but not much.

Personally, I think it's a toss up between a negative side weight truepancake core resin and a pearl uretahane.

BTW #1: The negative side weight not only makes it roll earlier, it also reduces the backend.
BTW #2: I think the Flame Reactive, also a true pancake core resin, which uses the older Curelyon cover is milder than the HIT which uses the newer Pro-Glide cover, but I think it is not a huge difference.
BTW #3: Now that you've drawn the picture with the Target Zone, I am leaning more towards a pearl urethane.

I am getting the Red/Purple Flame Reactive next week, which is the solid of the Flame series; the Orange is the pearl. and I have a pearl urethane. I know this doesn't help you if you want to get him the ball this week. Neither one is very expensive. I bought the Red/Purple for $17 + $19 delivery from Ebay!

Aw, heck, everybody loves resin. Go for the resin!

I already have the HIT for him. The Flame Reactive (orange) has been discontinued, and they did not have any in 15lbs. So I am stuck with the HIT.

The ball has 1 1/2-2in pin, and 3.75 oz of topweight. I am going to limited on how high I can put the pin over his fingers, but how about this layout then..

Not a major problem; just offering what I think. The Hit should be perfectly fine for him.

Looks fine. Give it a shot.
I forgot if you have a spinner or not. The ball, being resin can be sanded finer, say 600, then 1000, then 1500 and then repolished. The finer grit will make it hook even less, and the polish should add length if that is needed. If Storm followed their standard, the cover is 1500 grit polish. If you sand it very fine and then use a strong, very fine polish, it will hook even less and get even more length. But wait and see what happens first.
